Chapter 9 - A Video Without the BeginningThe edited recording appeared online at 7:42 on a Monday morning.

By eight o'clock, more than forty thousand people had watched it.
By noon, the number had climbed into the hundreds of thousands.
The clip lasted eleven seconds.
It showed Emily crying on a studio mat while Lily crouched over her.
Then Daniel entered the frame, visibly angry.
The footage ended before he struck Lily.
There was no image of the falling light.
No image of Lily reaching Emily in time.
No evidence of the danger that had caused the little girl to fall.
Above the video, a local entertainment account had written:
Connecticut businessman's daughter reportedly injured during photography session. Family reviewing possible negligence.
Lily watched it once.
Then she closed her laptop.
Sophie sat beside her at the kitchen table.
"That's edited."
"Yes."
"They cut out everything that explains what happened."
"Yes."
"Then we should tell people."
Lily shook her head.
"We should give it to Aisha."
Sophie stared at her.
"You're going to let them do this?"
"I'm not going to help them turn Emily into a public spectacle."
Sophie looked away.
She knew Lily was right.
She hated that Lily had to be.
Within an hour, Lily's phone filled with messages.
Some were supportive.
Others accused her of carelessness, dishonesty, and trying to exploit a wealthy family.
One former client asked whether she had a history of unsafe working conditions.
Another demanded a refund for an upcoming session.
Lily had spent years establishing herself as someone parents could trust with their children.
Now strangers were questioning her character after watching eleven seconds taken out of context.
Aisha called before lunch.
"The clip is an export," she said. "It isn't the original camera file."
"How can you tell?"
"There are signs of editing and re-encoding. We can't determine exactly what the omitted footage shows from this copy, but whoever published it had access to video from that camera."
Lily stood.
"Vanessa."
"Possibly. We need to prove who supplied it."
"The foundation has the card."
"Or someone associated with it does."
Aisha paused.
"We're making a formal demand for the original. And I'm sending preservation notices to the account that published this, the hosting service, and the foundation's representatives."
Lily sat down again.
"Does the edited clip prove anything?"
"It proves someone chose to show the public an incomplete sequence. That may matter a great deal."
Across town, Daniel was watching the same video in his office.
The clip had arrived in a message from an investor asking whether the negative publicity would affect Vale Development.
Daniel played it repeatedly.
He remembered entering the studio.
He remembered Lily over Emily.
He remembered Vanessa shouting that Lily had knocked the child down.
But something about the footage bothered him.
He paused near the beginning.
There was a sharp change in brightness across the white backdrop.
A moving shadow.
Something large had passed through the light.
Daniel played the clip again.
The shadow appeared just before Lily lowered herself over Emily.
It was impossible to tell exactly what had produced it.
But it was consistent with something falling.
He enlarged the image.
The quality deteriorated.
Still, a dark edge moved briefly across the frame.
Daniel called Vanessa.
She answered from the foundation offices.
"Have you seen the video?" he asked.
A pause.
"What video?"
"The one circulating online."
"Oh, Daniel. I was afraid something like this would happen."
"Who released it?"
"I don't know."
"Why does it start after Lily reaches Emily?"
"Because whoever posted it probably wanted to show the part they thought mattered."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"The recording shows a shadow."
"What?"
"On the backdrop."
"Daniel, lighting changes in studios."
"Not like this."
She was silent.
He continued.
"I want the complete recording delivered to my office today."
"That might not be possible."
"Why?"
"Because the legal department is handling it."
"Then tell them I'm requesting it."
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"You're upset again. Please don't make another impulsive decision."
Daniel looked toward the photograph on his desk.
It showed Mara laughing beside Emily on the girl's third birthday.
He remembered Mara once telling him that love became dangerous when it refused to accept facts.
"I'm not asking for advice," he said.
"I'm asking for the recording."
He ended the call.
At the foundation office, Vanessa stood motionless with her phone in her hand.
Owen Brice watched her from the doorway.
"Is there a problem?"
"Someone leaked an incomplete video."
Owen's eyes narrowed.
"Wasn't that the point?"
Vanessa turned sharply.
"What did you say?"
"You wanted people to see the photographer as responsible."
"That doesn't mean I wanted this released without approval."
Owen looked uneasy.
"Victor's people have media contacts. Perhaps someone thought they were helping."
Vanessa went to her desk.
She opened a locked drawer and removed a small padded envelope.
Inside was the original memory card from Lily's camera.
She stared at it.
The recording had become more useful than she had imagined.
It could damage Lily.
It could destroy Daniel's reputation.
And it could expose everything Vanessa had done in the studio.
She returned the card to the envelope.
Then she made a call.
"Victor? We have a problem with the footage."
May you like
Victor listened.
Finally, he said, "Then make sure no one sees the beginning."
