Chapter 14 - The Apology Lily RefusedDaniel found Lily at a small coffee shop near the courthouse.

Aisha Patel sat beside her.

The meeting had been arranged through their attorneys, and Daniel's lawyer had advised him to say as little as possible.

Daniel had ignored that advice.

He approached the table without his usual confidence.

Lily watched him sit.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said, "I came to apologize."

Lily's face remained unreadable.

"You already sent flowers."

"I know."

"And a letter."

"Yes."

"Neither changed what happened."

Daniel looked down.

"I understand."

Aisha remained silent, allowing Lily to control the conversation.

Daniel took a breath.

"I was wrong to strike you. I should have listened. I should have asked what happened before believing Vanessa."

Lily studied him.

"Why didn't you?"

He looked up.

"Because I thought Emily was hurt."

"That explains why you were frightened."

"I know."

"It doesn't explain why you decided I was the person who hurt her."

Daniel swallowed.

"I believed what I was told."

"By your wife."

"Yes."

"And you didn't believe me."

"No."

Lily looked away for a moment.

Outside, pedestrians hurried through the drizzle.

She remembered photographing Daniel years earlier at a charity event.

He had spent the evening helping volunteers carry supplies while Mara organized tables for an art auction.

Back then, he had seemed ordinary.

Kind.

Capable of embarrassment.

The man sitting opposite her now looked older.

But she refused to let pity soften what he had done.

"You didn't just hit me," she said. "You let the foundation tell people I endangered your child. You let a video circulate that showed only part of what happened."

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't authorize the video."

"But you didn't correct the accusations."

He looked down.

"No."

"Did you authorize the insurance claim against me?"

"No."

"Someone used your electronic signature."

"I know."

She leaned forward.

"Then why should I trust anything you say?"

Daniel had no answer.

Aisha spoke for the first time.

"Mr. Vale, my client is entitled to receive the original recording and relevant evidence. We have also requested that the foundation correct statements unsupported by its investigation."

Daniel nodded.

"I've instructed the lawyers to cooperate."

Lily looked at him.

"Your wife controls the card."

Daniel's expression tightened.

"That's what I'm trying to establish."

"Then establish it."

He looked directly at Lily.

"Emily remembers the light falling."

Lily felt her throat tighten.

"Is she all right?"

"Physically, yes. She's seeing a therapist."

"Good."

"She's been asking about you."

Lily's eyes filled unexpectedly.

She looked away.

Daniel continued.

"She remembers you taking her out of the way."

Lily pressed her fingers against the table.

For weeks, she had been trying not to imagine Emily believing the accusation.

Now relief and grief arrived together.

"Then listen to her," Lily whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"I am."

She looked back at him.

"And don't use her memories to make yourself feel forgiven."

He flinched.

Aisha glanced toward Lily but said nothing.

Lily continued.

"She needs a father who makes her feel safe. Not one who asks her to rescue him from the consequences of his mistakes."

Daniel sat motionless.

Then he said, "You're right."

Lily had expected excuses.

She had prepared herself for denials.

His simple agreement unsettled her more than either would have.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

Aisha's expression sharpened.

He withdrew a folded sheet of paper.

"This is a written statement acknowledging that I struck you and that I did not witness what happened before I entered the studio. My attorney has a copy."

He placed it on the table.

"I intend to correct the foundation's public statements too."

Lily did not touch the paper.

"Why now?"

Daniel looked exhausted.

"Because I watched an edited video and realized I had allowed someone else to decide what I was permitted to see."

Lily held his gaze.

"Then find the rest."

Daniel nodded.

When he rose to leave, Lily stopped him.

"Daniel."

He turned.

"I don't forgive you."

He stood very still.

Then he said, "I understand."

She watched him walk away.

Aisha waited until he had disappeared before speaking.

"How do you feel?"

Lily looked at the paper.

"Angry."

"Anything else?"

"Sad."

"That's allowed."

Lily unfolded Daniel's statement.

It was carefully written.

It acknowledged his actions without blaming Emily or claiming that fear excused him.

It did not ask Lily for forgiveness.

For the first time, Daniel had put his own wrongdoing into words.

That mattered.

But it wasn't enough.

Before Lily could say anything else, Aisha's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

"Slow down," she said.

Lily straightened.

Aisha listened for another minute.

Then she covered the phone.

"It's Miles Grant's attorney."

Lily's pulse quickened.

"What does he want?"

Aisha looked at her.

"Miles says that when he collected the camera card, security procedure required him to create an evidence copy before handing over the original."

Lily went still.

Aisha continued.

"He says the company ordered the copy deleted."

"Was it?"

"That's what he wants to discuss."

Lily gripped the edge of the table.

"Does he still have the footage?"

Aisha looked at the phone.

"His attorney says there may be a recoverable copy."

May you like

Then she added the detail that changed the entire investigation.

"Miles is willing to identify who ordered its destruction."
