Chapter 15 - What His Father Didn't SeeNathan confronted Vivian that evening.

He had considered waiting for Rebecca's advice.
He understood that any confrontation could complicate the financial investigation.
But after watching Owen stumble toward the elevator, he could not sit through another family dinner pretending nothing had happened.
Vivian was arranging white roses in the dining room when he entered.
She turned with an easy smile.
“Rebecca kept you late.”
Nathan didn't answer.
The smile faded.
“What happened?”
“I saw the video.”
Her hands stopped moving.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Vivian set down the flowers.
“What video?”
“The original.”
She looked toward the doorway.
“Was Rebecca there?”
“Yes.”
“Did she explain how misleading camera angles can be?”
Nathan stared at her.
“I watched you open your hand.”
Vivian folded her arms.
“Owen moved unexpectedly.”
“Why did you tell me Ryan grabbed him?”
“Because that's what I saw when you arrived.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You were standing there the whole time.”
“He touched Owen.”
“He saved Owen.”
Vivian's expression hardened.
“You weren't there.”
“No,” Nathan said. “I wasn't. And you used that.”
Her mouth opened.
He continued before she could interrupt.
“You knew I hadn't seen the stumble. You pointed at Ryan and made him sound dangerous.”
“Nathan—”
“You watched me hit him.”
“I tried to calm things down afterward.”
“You told the company to fire him.”
“I protected our family.”
“Our family?”
Nathan's voice broke.
“You put Owen in that doorway.”
Vivian stepped back.
“The elevator has safety sensors.”
The words came too quickly.
Nathan stared at her.
“How did you know that was relevant?”
She looked away.
“Everyone knows modern elevators have sensors.”
“Then you knew the doors were closing.”
“Nathan, you're twisting everything.”
He moved closer but stopped several feet away.
“I need you to answer one question truthfully.”
Vivian remained silent.
“Did you deliberately release Owen because you wanted me to see Ryan holding him?”
For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.
It lasted only a second.
But Nathan saw it.
“You're being ridiculous.”
“Did you?”
“I would never hurt Owen.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Vivian's voice rose.
“You slapped that employee. Not me.”
Nathan flinched.
She stepped forward.
“Don't put your guilt on me. You lost control. You embarrassed yourself. And now you're desperately searching for someone to blame.”
He felt the force of her accusation.
Because part of it was true.
He had struck Ryan.
Vivian had not moved his arm.
She had not forced his hand.
He had made that decision.
“You're right,” he said quietly.
Vivian blinked.
“I was wrong to hit him. That's mine to answer for.”
He held her gaze.
“But it doesn't make your lie disappear.”
She laughed once, sharply.
“Evelyn has turned you against me.”
“No.”
“Then who? Rebecca? That employee?”
“My son.”
Vivian looked stunned.
Nathan continued.
“Owen told me you let go. He told Teresa. He told his psychologist he was frightened because his hand was empty.”
“He's four years old!”
“And you're thirty-seven.”
Silence followed.
Nathan had never spoken to her that way.
Vivian turned toward the window.
“So this is what happens,” she said. “Claire's son says something, and suddenly I'm the outsider again.”
Nathan felt a flicker of sympathy.
Vivian had often complained about living in a house full of reminders of his first wife.
He had tried to reassure her.
He had given her space, responsibility, and a place in his son's life.
Now he wondered whether he had confused generosity with blindness.
“You are Owen's stepmother,” he said. “That gives you an obligation to protect him.”
Vivian's shoulders stiffened.
“I know what I am.”
“Then act like it.”
She turned.
“And what exactly are you going to do?”
Nathan hesitated.
He had spent the afternoon speaking with Rebecca about temporary protective arrangements, but he had not yet decided how to explain them.
“Teresa will take Owen to stay with my sister Margaret for a few days. I'll stay there too until we've arranged a longer-term plan.”
Vivian stared.
“You're taking him away from me?”
“I'm removing him from this conflict.”
“You can't just do that.”
“I'm his father. You're not his legal guardian.”
Her face changed.
The words had struck deeper than he intended.
For a moment, she looked genuinely wounded.
Then the expression vanished.
“You'll regret humiliating me.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Maybe. But I would regret ignoring Owen more.”
He walked upstairs.
Behind him, Vivian stood alone among the white roses.
She waited until his footsteps disappeared.
Then she picked up her phone.
Colin answered on the second ring.
“He knows,” she said.
“How much?”
“The elevator. Maybe more.”
Colin swore under his breath.
Vivian looked toward the staircase.
“Move the board meeting forward.”
“We can't do that without proper notice.”
“Then give them proper notice.”
“Vivian, this will look like a power grab.”
May you like
Her answer was almost calm.
“Only if we lose.”
