Chapter 19 - The Original FilesThe breakthrough came from an ordinary archive.

Not a secret bank vault.

Not a hidden recording.

A routine document-management backup preserved by an outside service provider.

The independent forensic accounting firm retained by Mercer Renewal had requested the relevant logs and historic files.

By Wednesday morning, the first authenticated comparison was complete.

The investigators found that several contractor records had been replaced during the last week of November 2019.

The original versions contained Simon Ortiz's warnings.

The replacement versions omitted them.

Both sets bore the same internal project identifiers.

One version listed repairs as incomplete.

The other listed them as substantially finished.

Priya Desai explained the findings to the special board committee.

"The revisions were uploaded from an account assigned to Celeste Vale. That alone doesn't prove who used the account, but it establishes a starting point."

Helena Brooks looked at the screen.

"What else?"

"The service provider preserved revision timestamps and associated activity logs. We also obtained contemporaneous emails voluntarily supplied through counsel."

Olivia nodded.

"Celeste's attorney has made contact."

Priya displayed an email.

It was from Robert to Celeste.

Remove the disputed engineering language from the lender packet. We will reconcile the field documentation separately.

The date was November 26, 2019.

Two days before Hannah's access was revoked.

Helena leaned back.

"That's significant."

Priya nodded.

"But we need the full context, including whether any reconciliation was actually performed."

Olivia looked grim.

"The records reviewed so far do not show one."

The next document was worse.

An email from Celeste to Robert.

Hannah has noticed the discrepancy. She may contact Daniel directly.

Robert's reply came seventeen minutes later.

Handle her access. Daniel does not need another distraction.

Daniel read the exchange when Rebecca later provided the material authorized for his review.

He felt physically sick.

Hannah had noticed the discrepancy.

She had tried to tell him.

And the people closest to him had treated her integrity as a problem to be managed.

Then came the banking records.

The company had authorized a restricted restoration-account release based on Keystone invoices.

Some funds had paid legitimate subcontractors.

Other disbursements lacked adequate support.

One substantial payment had gone to a consulting entity linked through contracts and banking records to Marsh Point.

Investigators were now tracing the ultimate use of those funds.

The documentation did not yet answer every question.

But it contradicted years of statements that Keystone had completed the billed work.

Late that afternoon, Rebecca received a call from Margaret Ellis, Celeste's attorney.

Margaret said her client was willing to provide information through counsel and appropriate investigative channels.

Among the materials were preserved emails concerning Hannah's intercepted correspondence.

There was also evidence that Robert had instructed a private investigator to gather information about Hannah and Lucy after the wedding.

Rebecca notified Detective Bell.

The investigator's contract and communications would be examined through the proper process.

Daniel met Hannah at Ruth's house that evening.

Lucy was upstairs with Jonah, reading a bedtime story.

Theo slept beside Ruth in the living room.

Daniel handed Hannah a copy of the independent investigators' preliminary findings, which Rebecca had cleared for sharing.

Hannah read silently.

Her expression barely changed.

When she finished, she placed the papers on the table.

"So they finally found it."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

She stared at the page.

"Seven years."

"I know."

"Seven years of people looking at me like I was dishonest."

Daniel sat across from her.

"I'm sorry."

Hannah's eyes filled.

"I lost my job. I lost people I thought were friends. I couldn't get hired in the same kind of position because I was afraid someone would call Mercer and hear Robert's version."

Daniel listened.

"I took bookkeeping contracts from my kitchen table while Lucy slept. I borrowed money from Ruth to pay for my delivery."

Her voice broke.

"And every time I thought about contacting you again, I remembered the last thing you said."

Daniel looked down.

He knew the words.

If you cared about me, you'd stop trying to destroy everything I built.

Hannah wiped her face.

"You didn't just refuse to believe me. You made me ashamed of telling the truth."

Daniel felt tears run down his cheeks.

He did not reach for her.

He did not ask her to forgive him.

For once, he let her anger exist without trying to make it smaller.

After a long silence, Hannah asked, "What happens now?"

"The board is reviewing the findings. The company's lawyers are considering claims to recover the money."

"And Robert?"

"The evidence may be referred to law enforcement and financial regulators."

She nodded.

"What about Celeste?"

"She has her own lawyer. She's providing documents."

Hannah stared at him.

"Do you feel sorry for her?"

Daniel took a breath.

"Part of me does."

Hannah looked away.

He continued.

"But feeling sorry for someone doesn't excuse what they did."

She nodded slowly.

"Good."

As Daniel prepared to leave, Jonah came downstairs.

Lucy's bedroom door remained slightly open.

"She's asleep," Jonah said.

Daniel smiled.

"Thanks."

Jonah looked at the papers on the table.

"Did you find something?"

"Yes."

"Will it help Hannah?"

"I hope so."

Jonah studied him.

"Then make sure the truth isn't just another thing rich people argue about while everybody else pays for it."

Daniel looked at Hannah.

She was holding the first document that supported what she had said seven years before.

He understood exactly what Jonah meant.

That night, Celeste sat alone in her apartment.

She opened the photograph of herself in her wedding gown.

It had been taken before Lucy entered the hall.

She looked happy.

Beautiful.

Certain.

Celeste stared at the image.

Then she turned it facedown.

For years, she had believed that obtaining Daniel's love would make her worthy.

Instead, she had sacrificed her honesty to keep him.

And now she would have to live with the knowledge that the man she wanted to marry had discovered who she was only after losing everything she had tried to control.
