Chapter 17 - The Video Everyone SawThe wedding video appeared online on Sunday evening.

It lasted fifteen seconds.

The recording showed Lucy entering with Theo.

Celeste throwing the envelope.

The frightened child crouching.

Robert colliding with Daniel.

The two adult strikes.

The falling gifts.

And Daniel dropping his ring.

By midnight, thousands of people had watched it.

By Monday morning, the number was far higher.

Headlines spread across local news sites and social media.

Who Is the Little Girl at the Center of the Mercer Scandal?

Daniel saw the video in Rebecca's office.

He watched it once.

Then he turned the phone facedown.

"Who released it?"

"We don't know," Rebecca said.

"Can we get it removed?"

"We can request removal from the accounts we identify, especially because a minor is featured. We can't guarantee that copies won't continue circulating."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Lucy shouldn't be online."

"No," Rebecca agreed. "She shouldn't."

At Ruth's house, Hannah sat beside Lucy on the sofa.

The television was off.

The phone had been unplugged from its charger and placed in a drawer.

Lucy looked worried.

"Are people mad at me?"

Hannah put an arm around her.

"No, sweetheart."

"Mrs. Patterson said people were talking."

"Some adults are discussing something they don't fully understand."

Lucy looked at her.

"Did I do something bad?"

"No."

"Then why are they saying my name?"

Hannah held her closer.

"Because adults sometimes forget that children deserve privacy."

Ruth entered carrying Theo.

He was awake, his little hands opening and closing.

Lucy reached for him.

Ruth sat beside her so she could touch his blanket.

Lucy smiled faintly.

"At least Theo doesn't know."

Hannah felt tears gather.

"No," she said softly. "He doesn't."

That afternoon, Daniel received a call from Mercer Renewal's temporary chief executive, Malcolm Voss.

"Your scandal is affecting the company."

Daniel sat back.

"My scandal?"

"Investors are asking questions."

"About the wedding or the restoration accounts?"

"Both."

"Then answer the questions about the accounts."

Malcolm's voice hardened.

"You have no authority to direct company communications."

"I'm not directing you."

"You're making the situation worse."

Daniel looked at the paused video on his screen.

"Did you release the recording?"

"What?"

"Did you?"

"Of course not."

"Then you'll support an investigation into who accessed the estate's security footage?"

Malcolm hesitated.

"That's a private matter."

"A child's identity has been exposed."

"We have bigger problems."

Daniel ended the call.

For several seconds, he stared at the wall.

Then he called Rebecca.

"I want to make a statement."

She sighed.

"About the accusations?"

"About my conduct."

"Let's discuss exactly what you intend to say."

The statement was issued that evening.

It did not mention Lucy's surname, school, or personal circumstances.

It did not accuse Celeste of a crime.

It acknowledged that Daniel had struck another adult during the wedding and that he was cooperating with the legal process.

He apologized for his conduct and asked the public to respect the privacy of the children involved.

He did not portray himself as a hero.

He did not ask for sympathy.

The response was mixed.

Some people praised him for accepting responsibility.

Others believed he had minimized the harm.

Many focused on the child.

The attention exhausted him.

That night, he sat in his apartment, reading comments he knew he should ignore.

Then a message arrived from Hannah.

Lucy asked if you were still coming tomorrow.

Daniel stared at the screen.

He checked his calendar.

Tuesday. Ten in the morning.

He replied:

Yes. I'll be there.

The following morning, he arrived at Ruth's house at exactly ten.

Lucy opened the door with Hannah beside her.

She looked surprised.

"You came."

"I said I would."

She stepped aside.

"We saved the castle."

Daniel smiled.

"I'm glad."

For twenty minutes, they repaired a cardboard tower.

For another ten, they read a book about a horse that was afraid of storms.

Daniel's phone vibrated three times.

He ignored it.

Lucy noticed.

"Don't you have to answer?"

"Not right now."

"Is it work?"

"Probably."

She looked down at the book.

"Mommy says work can wait sometimes."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"She's right."

Lucy leaned against the sofa cushion.

After a moment, she asked, "Are you going to get married again?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I don't know."

"To the blonde lady?"

"No."

"Because of me?"

He shook his head.

"Because there were problems between us that had nothing to do with you."

Lucy nodded.

Then she asked a question that took his breath away.

"Would you have still wanted to marry her if I hadn't come?"

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He could not give her the comforting lie.

"I don't know," he admitted.

Lucy stared at the drawing on the coffee table.

Then she said quietly, "I'm glad I came."

Daniel felt the words settle deep inside him.

He could not undo the fear she had experienced.

But he could make sure she never had to regret finding him.

After the visit, Rebecca called.

The independent investigators had obtained evidence that the wedding video had been exported from the estate's security system by an authorized event contractor.

A payment for the footage had reportedly come through a media intermediary.

The source of that payment was not yet established.

Then Rebecca added another development.

"The city has scheduled a public hearing concerning Oak Terrace's compliance with its recorded affordable-housing commitments."

Daniel looked toward Ruth's front door.

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

"Can Hannah testify?"

"If she wishes. So can residents with firsthand knowledge."

Daniel glanced at the drawing Lucy had made.

He could not control the public's fascination with his canceled wedding.

But perhaps the attention could finally be redirected toward forty-two apartments whose residents had been ignored for years.
