Chapter 9 - A Father's First BetrayalDaniel immediately showed the message to Detective Brooks.

Investigators began working to preserve the original communication and identify its source.

Sarah could barely look away from Mia's photograph.

Her daughter was alive.

That was the only comfort she could find.

Mia's cheeks were flushed. Her hair was tangled. She looked frightened.

But Sarah could see no obvious injury.

She pressed the phone against her chest and cried.

Daniel reached toward her.

She stepped away.

He lowered his hand.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Sarah said, “There's something you haven't told me.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Sarah—”

“Your mother knew exactly where those trust documents were. She knew about the board meeting. She knew which provisions mattered. How?”

Daniel turned toward the window.

Sarah waited.

Finally he answered.

“Because I asked her for help.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“With what?”

“The company's refinancing.”

Daniel explained that Whitmore Development had borrowed heavily to finish a luxury residential project outside Philadelphia.

Construction delays and rising costs had put pressure on the company's cash reserves.

A major lender had demanded additional security before extending the loan.

Daniel had considered pledging assets and interests held outside the family trust, but the proposed arrangements would have required approvals he did not have.

Evelyn offered to help negotiate.

“She said she could bring in investors,” Daniel explained.

Sarah folded her arms.

“And?”

“She connected me with Andrew Mercer and a private investment group.”

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I thought I could solve it before it became a family crisis.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“Our daughter has disappeared, and you're still describing secrets as solutions.”

Daniel flinched.

“I was wrong.”

“How much money?”

He hesitated.

“Eighteen million dollars.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Eighteen million?”

“That's the current financing gap and associated obligations we're trying to restructure. It isn't all immediately payable.”

“And what does your mother want?”

“I thought she wanted the company protected.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“What did you promise her?”

Daniel finally met her eyes.

“I agreed to recommend that she become chair of a new family oversight committee.”

Sarah's expression hardened.

“Which committee?”

“One that would supervise certain family-held investments and charitable assets. It wasn't finalized.”

“So you gave her a path back into power.”

He said nothing.

Sarah remembered an argument from three months earlier.

Evelyn had demanded that Mia spend every weekend at the mansion.

When Sarah refused, Evelyn told Daniel he needed to show greater leadership within his family.

Daniel sided with his mother.

Sarah had spent the night crying in their bedroom.

Now the memory felt different.

“Were you trying to keep her happy because of the money?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than a lie would have.

Sarah turned away.

Outside, the last of the afternoon sunlight settled over the ruined birthday party.

Detective Brooks entered.

“We've identified the private property's most recent tenant,” she said.

Sarah spun toward her.

“Who?”

“A company registered to a woman named Patricia Cole. But the lease was guaranteed by someone else.”

“Evelyn?”

“Not directly.”

Brooks looked at Daniel.

“The guarantor was Andrew Mercer.”

Daniel's mouth fell open.

His chief financial officer.

The man who had demanded his signature that evening.

Then Brooks added something worse.

“We also found surveillance footage from a nearby gas station. The van stopped there shortly after leaving the property.”

Sarah approached her.

“Was Mia inside?”

“We believe so.”

“Where did it go?”

Brooks hesitated.

“The vehicle was followed by a black SUV. We're identifying that vehicle now.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would anyone need a second car?”

Brooks answered carefully.

“That is one of the questions we're investigating.”

Then Sarah's phone rang.

An unfamiliar woman spoke.

“Sarah Whitmore?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Margaret Vale.”

May you like

Sarah gripped the phone.

“I know about your daughter,” Margaret said. “And I know why Evelyn chose her fifth birthday.”
