Chapter 20 - The Birthday WishSarah's phone rang at 11:42 a.m.

She had been sitting in the same chair for almost two hours.
Daniel was beside the window, speaking quietly with Rebecca about preserving company records.
Sarah answered immediately.
“Hello?”
“Mrs. Whitmore, this is Detective Brooks.”
Sarah stood.
“Did you find her?”
“Yes.”
For a moment, Sarah couldn't speak.
Brooks continued.
“Mia is with officers. She's awake, responsive, and being assessed by emergency medical personnel.”
Sarah pressed one hand against her mouth.
Daniel turned.
Sarah looked at him.
“They found her.”
He dropped his phone onto the sofa.
“What?”
“They found Mia.”
Daniel crossed the room.
Brooks explained that Mia would be taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
Sarah and Daniel could meet her there.
The drive felt endless.
Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel.
Sarah sat beside him, holding Mr. Buttons.
Neither spoke until they reached the hospital.
Then Daniel whispered, “I'm afraid she won't trust us.”
Sarah looked at him.
“She needs us. Whatever she feels, we're going to listen.”
A nurse led them into a quiet examination room.
Mia sat on a hospital bed beneath a white blanket.
A pediatric clinician was speaking gently with her.
When the door opened, Mia looked up.
For a moment, she seemed unable to believe what she was seeing.
Then she screamed.
“Mommy!”
Sarah crossed the room.
She gathered Mia into her arms, holding her carefully, afraid of squeezing too tightly.
Mia clung to her neck.
“Mommy! Mommy!”
“I'm here.”
Sarah's voice broke.
“I'm right here, sweetheart.”
Mia buried her face against her shoulder.
“I was good.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Oh, baby.”
“I was really good.”
“I know.”
“Grandma said I had to be good or you wouldn't come.”
Sarah held her daughter closer.
“Listen to me, Mia. Nothing you do could ever make me stop loving you.”
The little girl pulled back.
“Even if I was naughty?”
“Even then.”
“Even if I cried?”
“Especially when you cry and need me.”
Mia looked toward Daniel.
“Daddy?”
He stepped forward.
His face was wet with tears.
“Hey, birthday girl.”
Mia reached for him.
Daniel wrapped his arms around both of them.
For several minutes, the family remained together without speaking.
Then Mia noticed the rabbit in Sarah's hand.
“Mr. Buttons!”
Sarah gave it to her.
Mia immediately examined the repaired ear.
“It's my real one.”
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.”
Mia pressed the rabbit against her cheek.
“They gave me a different one.”
“I know.”
“I didn't like it.”
“You don't have to.”
Mia lowered her voice.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Grandma said you were going away.”
Sarah touched her daughter's hair.
“Grandma was wrong.”
“Where?”
“Where was I going?”
Mia nodded.
Sarah looked at Daniel, then back at her daughter.
“Nowhere, sweetheart. I was looking for you the whole time.”
Mia thought about that.
Then she asked the question Sarah had dreaded.
“Why did Grandma lie?”
Sarah didn't rush to answer.
She knew a five-year-old child couldn't understand forged documents, family trusts, or a grandmother's obsession with control.
But Mia deserved honesty.
“Grandma made some very wrong choices,” Sarah said. “She tried to decide things that were not hers to decide.”
Mia frowned.
“About me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Sarah brushed a curl away from her face.
“Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes because they want to control other people. But it isn't okay, and it isn't your responsibility.”
Mia leaned against her.
“Can Grandma take me again?”
Daniel answered.
“No, sweetheart. We're going to do everything we can to keep you safe.”
The nurse returned with an update.
Mia was physically stable. The medical team wanted to finish the evaluation and discuss emotional support with her parents.
Sarah agreed.
As the nurse stepped away, Mia tugged Sarah's sleeve.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Did everyone eat my cake?”
Sarah looked at Daniel.
The question hurt more than either expected.
“No,” Sarah whispered.
Mia's eyes widened.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Can Zoe still have some?”
Sarah smiled through her tears.
“Of course.”
Mia rested her head against her mother's shoulder.
Then she whispered, “Good. Because I didn't get to make my wish.”
Sarah kissed her forehead.
“You can make it whenever you're ready.”
Mia closed her eyes.
For the first time since disappearing, she fell asleep in her mother's arms.
And outside the hospital room, Detective Brooks received the first formal statement from Andrew Mercer.
He had agreed to cooperate.
But his account contained a claim that would reopen the Whitmore family's oldest wounds.
Evelyn, he said, had not acted alone in preparing the documents.

Someone inside Daniel's company had been helping her for months.
And that person still had access to the family's financial records.
