Chapter 14 - Owen Says No AgainThe district asked Owen for access to his phone.

Not forced.

Requested.

He hesitated.

His mother Sarah asked:

“What do you want?”

“I don’t want adults reading everything.”

Fair.

Investigators needed only original photograph and metadata.

They created a limited extraction.

Owen watched.

No group chats.

No unrelated photos.

No private messages.

That mattered.

After Ms. Hargrove demanded:

Unlock it. Now.

the next authority figure showed him how legitimate evidence collection should work.

Consent.

Scope.

Purpose.

Documentation.

Owen noticed.

“So you don’t need my passcode?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because we only need one file.”

The contrast was almost too perfect.

Then Owen asked:

“What if I said no?”

“We’d discuss other legal ways to authenticate it.”

No threat of expulsion.

No ruler.

Authority without intimidation.

That helped him heal.

Later, Owen deleted duplicate copies of Emma’s photograph from his personal phone.

Official evidence retained.

He asked Emma first.

“Do you care?”

She thought.

“Keep one until case is done.”

“Okay.”

A year later she told him:

“Delete it.”

He did.

No screenshot.

No backup.

The image had done its job.

Emma should not remain permanently frozen in the worst haircut of her life inside a friend’s camera roll.
