Chapter 4 - The Names in the FileAdrian tried to laugh.

It sounded terrible.
“Where did you get this?”
Mateo stared at him.
“Our account.”
“No, I mean the paperwork.”
“That matters?”
Adrian rubbed the back of his neck.
“This is business stuff. Jayden shouldn't be here.”
Jayden leaned against the office door.
“I’m staying.”
“Mateo.”
“He's staying.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
For the first time in Jayden’s life, his uncle looked like a stranger.
Elena placed Maya’s video beside the invoice.
“Mrs. Harper punished our son today.”
Adrian glanced at the phone.
“She what?”
“She made him kneel.”
Adrian looked at Jayden’s hand.
The red line was still visible.
His face changed.
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
Silence.
Mateo stepped forward.
“What did you say?”
Adrian realized his mistake.
“I mean—obviously that shouldn't happen.”
Elena’s voice became very quiet.
“What wasn't supposed to happen?”
“Nothing.”
Mateo slammed his palm against the desk.
“Stop lying.”
Adrian flinched.
Jayden watched his father's face.
Mateo did not lose his temper often.
That frightened Jayden more than yelling would have.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“I'm trying to protect this family.”
“From what?”
“From losing everything.”
Mateo laughed.
“You stole thirteen thousand dollars.”
“I didn't steal it.”
“You transferred it.”
“It came back through business.”
“Where?”
Adrian hesitated.
Mateo moved closer.
“Where?”
“Marketing expenses.”
Elena shook her head.
“What does a middle-school dinner have to do with our marketing?”
Adrian would not answer.
Jayden thought of Mrs. Harper.
Your father enjoys making trouble for people who are trying to help him.
“Does Mrs. Harper know about the invoice?”
Adrian looked at him.
Too fast.
There was the answer.
Mateo saw it too.
“What did you tell the school about my son?”
“Nothing.”
“What did you tell them about me?”
“Nothing.”
Elena opened the office computer.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Don't.”
She stopped.
All three of them looked at him.
Elena whispered, “Why not?”
“Because you don't understand what you're looking for.”
“Then explain it.”
Adrian sat.
His shoulders sagged.
“Last year was bad.”
Mateo frowned.
“For the market?”
Adrian nodded.
“How bad?”
“Worse than you knew.”
“You handle the books with me.”
“I handle more of them.”
Mateo’s face went still.
Adrian continued.
“The restaurant contracts dropped. Fuel went up. Refrigeration repair cost us almost forty grand.”
“We covered it.”
“No. I covered it.”
“With what?”
Adrian looked at the floor.
“A line of credit.”
Elena cursed.
Mateo whispered, “In whose name?”
Adrian did not answer.
Mateo grabbed the desk.
“In whose name?”
“The company.”
“You needed both signatures.”
“I had both signatures.”
Mateo stared.
Then understood.
“You forged mine.”
Jayden felt the entire room shrink.
Adrian raised both hands.
“I was trying to keep the doors open.”
“And Harbor Community Consulting?”
Adrian breathed slowly.
“That came later.”
“What is it?”
“A company connected to people at the school.”
“Which people?”
“I don't know.”
Mateo stepped toward him.
“Don't insult me.”
“Voss.”
The principal’s name landed heavily.
Elena stared at Adrian.
“Principal Voss?”
Adrian nodded.
“He approached me after a school fundraiser last spring.”
“Why?”
“He knew the business was struggling.”
“How?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I told him.”
Mateo looked wounded.
“You told a school principal our financial problems?”
“He said he could send contracts our way.”
“For a cut.”
Adrian said nothing.
“How much?”
“Depends.”
“On what?”
“The job.”
Elena picked up the false invoice.
“The school pays us eighteen thousand. You send thirteen somewhere else. We keep five?”
“Sometimes.”
Mateo nearly laughed.
“You turned our company into a pass-through.”
“Mateo, listen to me. Without those contracts—”
“You forged my name.”
“I kept thirty-two people employed.”
“You used me.”
Adrian’s eyes reddened.
“I saved what Dad built.”
Jayden had heard enough.
“What does this have to do with Mrs. Harper?”
Nobody answered.
Jayden looked at his uncle.
“Why did she say Dad makes trouble?”
Adrian exhaled.
“Because Voss knows Mateo found one of the invoices.”
“How?”
“I told him.”
Mateo took a step backward.
That betrayal seemed worse than the forged signature.
“You told him?”
“I panicked.”
“You told a man who was stealing from the school that I was asking questions?”
“I didn't know what he'd do.”
Jayden pointed toward his hand.
“Now you do.”
Adrian covered his face.
Elena walked to the office printer.
“Give me every transaction involving the school.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Elena—”
“Every one.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because some of them don't say Jefferson Middle School.”
Mateo looked at him.
“What do they say?”
Adrian glanced at Jayden.
“Different nonprofits. Different vendors.”
“How many?”
Adrian swallowed.
“Enough.”
The office became silent except for the refrigerator compressor humming in the warehouse beyond the wall.
Elena opened the accounting program herself.
She searched Harbor Community Consulting.
Seventeen transactions appeared.
Total:
$146,200.
Mateo stared.
“This goes back two years.”
Adrian nodded.
Jayden noticed another column.
Reference numbers.
Some began JMS.
Others began HLF.
“What is HLF?”
Adrian said nothing.
Elena searched it.
Harbor Leadership Foundation.
Jayden recognized the name.
It appeared on posters throughout school.
HONOR. LEADERSHIP. FUTURE.
The foundation funded student awards, trips, tutoring, and scholarships.
Elena opened a payment.
A note appeared.
STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAM — DISCRETIONARY.
Then another.
DISCIPLINE INITIATIVE.
Jayden moved closer.
“What does discipline have to do with seafood?”
Nobody knew.
That evening, Maya’s mother brought over Ethan Brooks’s old school records.
They spread the papers across the Coles’ kitchen table.
Six disciplinary reports.
All signed by Mrs. Harper.
All approved by Voss.
Elena arranged them by date.
Mateo compared them with Adrian’s transactions.
Then he stopped.
“Look.”
Three disciplinary reports occurred within forty-eight hours of Harbor Leadership Foundation payments.
Jayden’s heart began pounding.
They checked another.
Another match.
Maya whispered, “That can't be random.”
Elena opened Jayden’s online school portal.
His disciplinary history appeared.
Jayden leaned forward.
“What?”
Four incidents were listed.
Disruptive behavior.
Defiance.
Aggressive conduct.
Parent non-cooperation.
Jayden stared.
“I've never seen these.”
Elena clicked the first.
Reported by: MRS. HARPER.
Approved by: LEONARD VOSS.
Date created:
Three days ago.
But the alleged incident date was six weeks earlier.
Mateo looked at his son.
“They're building a record.”
“For what?”
Nobody answered.
Then Elena clicked the attachment.
A scanned memo opened.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Student may possess knowledge regarding parent/vendor concerns.
Jayden stopped breathing.
Maya whispered, “They weren't disciplining you.”
Mateo read the sentence again.
Student may possess knowledge.
Elena looked at Adrian.
Her voice shook.
“They were trying to discredit him before he could say anything.”
Jayden stared at the false reports attached to his name.
The ruler had not been the beginning.
The insult had not been random.
The missing camera footage had not been panic.
Someone had prepared for this.
Weeks earlier.
And suddenly Jayden understood the most frightening part.

Mrs. Harper had not lost control in that classroom.
She had been following a plan.
