Chapter 3 - The Video Under the DeskThey watched the recording inside Mateo’s truck.

Nobody spoke for the first minute.

Maya had hidden her phone behind a stack of textbooks, leaving only the camera lens visible.

The angle was crooked.

The sound was muffled.

But the voices were clear.

Mrs. Harper stood beside Jayden’s desk.

“Your family has been warned about cooperation.”

Jayden’s recorded voice answered.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No, I don't.”

Mrs. Harper leaned closer.

“Your father enjoys making trouble for people who are trying to help him.”

Mateo paused the video.

Jayden looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Mateo did not answer.

Elena noticed.

“Mateo?”

“Keep playing.”

Maya tapped the screen.

Mrs. Harper’s voice continued.

“Perhaps a little public discipline will teach you something your parents obviously failed to teach.”

Then she ordered Jayden out of his chair.

The recording captured the kneeling.

The ruler.

The strike.

The insult.

The slap.

Officer Grant’s entrance.

Mrs. Harper’s sudden fake crying.

Everything.

When it ended, Elena sat perfectly still.

Maya whispered, “I’m sorry I didn't stand up sooner.”

Jayden looked at her.

“You did.”

“I waited.”

“You were scared.”

“So were you.”

“No.”

Maya almost smiled.

“You were definitely scared.”

Jayden thought about it.

Maybe she was right.

Not when the ruler came down.

Not when Mrs. Harper insulted his parents.

But afterward.

When every adult in the room could decide what the truth was worth.

Mateo took the phone carefully.

“Can you send this to us?”

Maya nodded.

“And your parents?”

“My mom knows I'm here.”

“Does she know what you recorded?”

Maya looked away.

“Yes.”

Elena frowned.

“And?”

“She told me not to get involved.”

Mateo handed the phone back.

“Why?”

Maya’s eyes filled.

“Because my brother had Mrs. Harper three years ago.”

Everyone went quiet.

“What happened?” Jayden asked.

“He got written up six times.”

“For what?”

“Being disrespectful. Disruptive. Aggressive.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Ethan barely talked.”

Elena leaned closer.

“Did Mrs. Harper punish him physically?”

“No.”

Maya hesitated.

“She made him stand in the back of the classroom for hours. She called him stupid. Said our mom raised him wrong.”

Jayden felt his stomach tighten.

“What happened?”

“He lost his recommendation for the magnet high school.”

Mateo slowly looked toward Elena.

Maya continued.

“My mom fought it. Principal Voss told her the records were documented and that challenging them would only make Ethan look worse.”

Elena asked, “Why didn't she go to the district?”

“She did.”

“What happened?”

“They sent the complaint back to the principal.”

Jayden swore under his breath.

Mateo opened his door.

“We're going back inside.”

Elena grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“We have proof.”

“We have a fourteen-year-old girl’s video. If we march back in angry, Voss will turn this into another problem.”

Mateo pulled his arm away.

“So we do nothing?”

“I didn't say that.”

She looked at Maya.

“First, this video gets copied.”

Then at Jayden.

“Second, nobody gives the school the original phone.”

Finally at Mateo.

“And third, you're going to tell me what Mrs. Harper meant when she said you enjoy making trouble.”

Mateo stared through the windshield.

His silence told Jayden there was something he did not know.

“Dad?”

Mateo rubbed both hands over his face.

“Three weeks ago, I found an invoice.”

“What invoice?”

“School fundraiser catering.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“Our company didn't cater anything this month.”

“I know.”

Mateo reached behind the seat and pulled out a battered black folder.

Jayden had seen it on the kitchen table several nights earlier.

Mateo opened it.

Inside were printed invoices.

Cole Family Seafood.

Jefferson Middle School Fall Leadership Dinner.

Seafood service: $18,750.

Elena laughed in disbelief.

“We didn't do this.”

Mateo pointed at the bottom.

His name appeared beside an electronic signature.

MATHEW COLE.

Elena’s face hardened.

“Your name is Mateo.”

“Exactly.”

Jayden took the page.

“Who made this?”

“I don't know.”

Elena looked at the amount.

“Eighteen thousand?”

“The market received a payment.”

Jayden frowned.

“So we got eighteen thousand dollars?”

“No.”

Mateo flipped to a bank statement.

The school had paid $18,750.

Two days later, $13,500 left the business account.

Destination:

Harbor Community Consulting LLC.

Elena stared.

“What is Harbor Community Consulting?”

“I don't know.”

“You manage vendor payments.”

“I know.”

“So how did thirteen thousand dollars leave our account?”

Mateo hesitated.

Jayden suddenly understood why his father looked ashamed.

“You didn't tell Mom.”

Mateo’s eyes dropped.

“No.”

Elena turned toward him slowly.

“How long have you known?”

“Three weeks.”

“You found thirteen thousand dollars missing from our business and didn't tell me?”

“I was trying to understand it before I worried you.”

“You mean before I caught you hiding it.”

“Elena—”

“Who has access to the business account?”

Mateo looked out the window.

Jayden knew the answer.

His mother did too.

She whispered the name.

“Adrian.”

Mateo’s older brother.

Jayden’s uncle.

Co-owner of Cole Family Seafood.

The man who had worked beside Mateo for nineteen years.

The man who ate Thanksgiving dinner at their house.

Maya shifted uncomfortably.

“I should go.”

Elena nodded absently.

“Thank you, sweetheart.”

Maya opened the door.

Before leaving, she looked at Jayden.

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“My brother kept all his old discipline papers.”

Jayden waited.

“Every report was signed by Mrs. Harper.”

Elena’s attention snapped toward her.

Maya continued.

“And every one had another signature.”

“Whose?”

Maya looked back at the school.

“Principal Voss.”

That afternoon, Mateo drove directly to the seafood market.

Adrian Cole was standing behind the office counter when they entered.

He smiled.

“Why aren't you at school, kid?”

Jayden put the fake invoice on the desk.

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

Mateo closed the office door.

“Tell me what Harbor Community Consulting is.”

Adrian did not touch the invoice.

For five full seconds, nobody moved.

Then Jayden noticed something.

May you like

His uncle was not confused.

He was terrified.
