Chapter 18 - Declan ApologizesMaisie was seven when Declan finally found words precise enough.
They were building a puzzle.
He said:
“When you were little, you tried to tell me Ms. Kendrick made you uncomfortable.”
Maisie remembered pieces.
“Green sweater teacher.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t listen well.”
“You came.”
“When Ortiz sent the video.”
She nodded.
Declan continued:
“I wish I had listened before I needed a video.”
Maisie looked at him.
“Sorry?”
“Yes.”
She put a puzzle piece down.
“Okay.”
No dramatic forgiveness scene.
Then:
“You believe me now?”
“Yes.”
“Even no video?”
Declan’s eyes filled.
May you like
“Yes.”
That was the real apology.
