Chapter 9 - The Deal She Almost LostHenry was furious.

“You threatened the manager of Blackwell?”

“I offered a deal.”

“You said you’d tell everyone.”

“That’s leverage.”

“That’s a sixteen-year-old trying to negotiate with a corporation.”

Margaret sat between them.

“Both statements may be true.”

Elsie folded her arms.

“He insulted me.”

“That is not a business strategy.”

Henry’s voice softened.

“Listen to me.”

She did.

“What you discovered has value because it works.”

He pointed toward the field.

“Don’t make it weaker by turning this into revenge.”

That hurt.

Because part of her wanted revenge.

She remembered Raymond’s face.

You filthy beggar.

Idiot.

She wanted him embarrassed.

Henry knew.

“I know what he said.”

Elsie looked up.

“He called you?”

“Afterward.”

“And?”

“I told him never to speak to my daughter that way again.”

Elsie had not known.

Henry continued:

“But if your idea is good, let the idea beat him.”

That night Elsie rewrote the proposal.

Not:

Give us money or I expose you.

Instead:

Blackwell provides defined plant-based residue suitable for controlled research.

Warren Farm manages small-scale trials.

All material is tested.

Results documented.

If commercially viable, further terms negotiated.

Henry read it.

“This sounds like a lawyer.”

“Mr. Rhodes helped.”

“That explains the semicolons.”

They laughed.

The following morning Blackwell called.

Not Raymond.

A woman named Caroline Price.

Director of sustainability and agricultural partnerships.

Blackwell suddenly had a department for exactly what Elsie had discovered.

Or perhaps it always did and nobody had connected the pieces.

Caroline asked for a meeting.

Elsie said:

“My father will be there.”

Henry smiled when she hung up.

May you like

“Learning.”

“Quiet.”
