Chapter 10 - Blackwell Comes to the FarmCaroline arrived with Raymond and two technical staff members.
No convoy.
No dramatic apology.
Raymond shook Henry’s hand.
Then Elsie’s.
He did not mention their first meeting.
Neither did she.
Caroline walked through the test plot.
Asked questions.
Lots of them.
“How much raw material?”
“What age?”
“What else went into the trial?”
“How long did maturation take?”
Elsie answered carefully.
When she did not know, she said so.
Raymond watched.
Perhaps for the first time, he was seeing not a farm girl playing in trash but someone who had kept records.
Caroline examined Mr. Rhodes’s test results.
“This isn’t enough for commercial use.”
“I know.”
Elsie’s answer surprised her.
“We’d need repeated trials.”
“Yes.”
“Contaminant screening.”
“Yes.”
“Consistency.”
“Yes.”
“Regulatory review.”
“Yes.”
Caroline smiled.
“You’ve been reading.”
“A lot.”
Raymond walked toward the fence.
The huge waste pile rose beyond it.
“How much material could you actually process?”
Elsie laughed.
“Not that.”
“Then what are we discussing?”
“A pilot.”
Caroline nodded.
“That’s what I was thinking.”
Blackwell agreed to fund independent testing and a controlled pilot at a university agricultural extension facility.
Not on the Warren farm.
That mattered to Henry.
Blackwell would also begin removing the oldest uncontrolled piles from the property line.
Not as admission of wrongdoing.
Because the site itself had become inefficient.
Elsie understood the corporate language now.
Sometimes practical progress arrived without anyone saying sorry.
She could live with that.
Almost.
Before leaving, Raymond paused.
“Elsie.”
She turned.
“I shouldn’t have spoken to you the way I did.”
She waited.
He looked uncomfortable.
“I saw a kid near a waste area and assumed you were causing trouble.”
“You called me filthy.”
“Yes.”
“And an idiot.”
“Yes.”
Elsie nodded.
“Okay.”
Raymond seemed confused.
“That’s it?”
“What do you want?”
He almost laughed.
“Nothing.”
“Good.”
May you like
She walked away.
An apology did not need to become friendship.
