Chapter 20 - The Seven Minutes Nobody Could EraseThe conference room was silent when the recording began.

Adrian sat beside Samuel Brooks.
Across the table were Evelyn Shaw, Olivia Grant, Mara Chen, and an independent investigator retained to examine the incident.
Graham had agreed to attend with his lawyer because the footage concerned his conduct directly.
A technician had authenticated the recording's source and preserved the original file.
The footage came from a fixed camera on the neighboring fuel-services building.
Its field of view was wide.
The image was not perfect.
But the yellow safety line was visible.
So was the aircraft.
And so were the people.
The time display read 6:01 p.m.
Celeste and Leo entered the frame.
Adrian leaned forward.
Leo wore his bright green jacket.
He held Celeste's hand.
They stopped near the hangar side entrance.
Celeste released his hand.
She looked toward the aircraft.
Then toward the area where Graham was working.
At 6:02, she moved closer to the yellow boundary.
She gestured toward the airplane.
Leo followed her pointing hand.
Celeste stepped backward.
Leo remained where he was.
Adrian's heart began pounding.
The video continued.
At 6:03, Celeste made another gesture.
This time it was more deliberate.
She extended an arm toward the operating aircraft and appeared to encourage Leo forward.
He walked.
One step.
Then another.
The green jacket moved in the airflow.
Adrian gripped the edge of the table.
Graham appeared in the far side of the frame.
He looked toward Leo.
Then he ran.
The entire room watched him reach the boy, wrap his arms around Leo's upper body, and pull him back behind the yellow line.
The motion was quick but controlled.
Leo began crying.
Graham knelt beside him.
He checked the boy's face and arms.
Celeste remained several yards away.
She did not visibly rush to help.
Adrian's stomach twisted.
The investigator paused the recording.
“Before we continue, I want to be precise,” he said. “The footage establishes a sequence of movements. It doesn't record what Celeste said, and we cannot determine her thoughts from facial expressions.”
Adrian nodded.
“But the sequence is consistent with Leo's account.”
“Yes.”
“And Graham pulled him to safety.”
“Yes.”
The investigator restarted the recording.
At 6:08, Adrian's black sedan entered the frame.
It slowed.
Stopped.
Parked.
Adrian emerged.
Celeste hurried toward him.
She pointed at Graham.
The recording had no audio, but Adrian remembered the words with unbearable clarity.
He dragged him across the hangar!
He watched himself stride toward Graham.
He saw Leo standing safely behind the yellow line.
He saw Graham turn toward him.
Then he watched himself slap the man who had saved his son.
The sound was absent.
That made it worse.
The silent image stripped away all the emotion Adrian had used to justify his behavior.
There was only a frightened father choosing violence before establishing the facts.
He looked away.
“Stop it.”
The investigator paused.
No one spoke.
Adrian pressed a hand over his face.
For years, he had believed that his instincts were reliable because his decisions often produced business success.
Now he was looking at proof that instinct without restraint could be cruel.
Graham sat motionless.
His jaw was tight.
Mara placed a hand lightly against his forearm.
“You okay?”
He nodded once.
Adrian lowered his hand.
“Graham.”
The mechanic looked at him.
“I am sorry.”
Graham's expression did not soften.
“I know.”
Adrian swallowed.
“I was wrong about what happened. And I was wrong to strike you. I will correct the public account and cooperate with the police report.”
Graham nodded.
“Thank you.”
The investigator continued.
“We also need to consider the security system records and the earlier incident narrative.”
Olivia opened a timeline.
At 5:47, Celeste's account requested confirmation of the camera maintenance window.
At 6:01, a draft incident memorandum was created through her document system.
At 6:03, Leo crossed the safety line.
At 6:04, Graham removed him from the hazardous area.
At 6:08, Adrian arrived.
At 6:09, the confrontation and slap occurred.
The timestamps had been reconciled with the original video and system records.
The draft memorandum was particularly disturbing.
Its first version contained language accusing Graham of dangerous conduct toward a child.
Later revisions added Adrian as an eyewitness and described a supposed disciplinary confrontation.
Samuel looked at the screen.
“The creation history is inconsistent with an account written only after the event.”
The investigator nodded.
“That is a reasonable concern. Whether it establishes deliberate planning requires considering the other evidence.”
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“What do you want to do?”
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
He thought of Nora.
Of the trust.
Of Graham's bruised face.
Of Leo staring at him in the hangar.
Then he answered.
“Preserve everything and provide the relevant evidence to the appropriate authorities.”
Graham looked at him carefully.
Adrian continued.
“And I want the false company narrative withdrawn immediately.”
Samuel made a note.
Olivia then placed another document on the screen.
It was a timeline of the questioned Cascade transactions and the acquisition negotiations.
“The financial review is separate,” she said, “but we've identified concerning overlap.”
She pointed to an email from Daniel Vale.
It was dated six days before the hangar incident.
The message referred to Graham's growing questions and the need to remove him from the upcoming review.
The final sentence read:
If Ellis remains inside the company during diligence, the vendor structure becomes impossible to defend.
Adrian stared.
Olivia scrolled lower.
Celeste's reply appeared beneath it.
I'll handle Ellis. Adrian will do what he always does when Leo is involved.
A silence settled over the room.
Graham felt cold.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Adrian stared at the sentence.
Celeste had not merely anticipated his reaction.
She had counted on it.
May you like
And for the first time, Adrian understood that the most dangerous part of her plan had not been the airplane.
It had been her certainty that she could use his love for his son to make him hurt an innocent man.
