Chapter 18 - The First Supervised Visit

Emily chose not to attend.

Sophie eventually did.

Not because the court forced an immediate reunion.

Because after treatment recommendations, careful review, and preparation with her therapist, a short supervised contact was approved.

Sophie was five.

Two years had passed.

She knew Mark was her father.

Her memories were fragmented.

Some warm.

Some frightening.

The visit occurred at a family-contact center.

Laura waited elsewhere.

A trained supervisor stayed inside.

Mark brought no toys resembling weapons.

No surprises.

He sat at a table.

Sophie entered holding her therapist-approved comfort rabbit.

Mark cried when he saw her.

Sophie did not run to him.

He did not ask her to.

That mattered.

“Hi, Sophie.”

She looked at the supervisor.

Then back.

“Hi.”

Mark said:

“You can sit wherever you want.”

Laura learned afterward that those were his first meaningful words to her.

You can sit wherever you want.

Not hold still.

Not obey.

Not come here.

Choice.

The visit lasted thirty minutes.

Sophie drew a house.

Mark colored a tree.

When time ended, Sophie left calmly.

She did not ask when she would see him again.

She did not say never.

Both were acceptable.

Emily listened to the report.

“Was he nice?”

Laura nodded.

“During the visit, yes.”

Emily looked irritated.

“What?”

“That doesn’t mean he’s fixed.”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Laura understood why Emily needed the distinction.

Kindness for thirty minutes could not overwrite years.

May you like

But thirty safe minutes could still be thirty safe minutes.

Healing required room for small truths.
