Chương 24 - The Ring

They moved in together six months later.
Bella chose the smallest bedroom because it had a window facing sunrise.
Claire chose a yellow kitchen.
Daniel built bookshelves.
On moving day, Bella found the old ring box.
Daniel had accidentally packed it inside a desk drawer.
She opened it.
“Mommy!”
Claire froze.
Daniel entered behind her.
Bella held up the platinum ring.
“The wedding circle!”
Claire and Daniel looked at each other.
Neither spoke.
Bella frowned.
“Why Mommy not wear?”
Daniel crouched.
“Because we didn't get married that day.”
“Because Henry?”
Claire knelt beside him.
“Because there were important truths we needed to deal with first.”
Bella considered.
“Done now?”
Daniel almost laughed.
Claire smiled.
“Mostly.”
Bella handed him the ring.
“You can do wedding.”
Then she walked away carrying a box of stuffed animals.
Daniel stared at the ring.
Claire laughed.
“She has spoken.”
“Apparently.”
He closed the box.
Claire looked at him.
“You still have it.”
“Yes.”
“After everything?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel thought.
“Because I stopped seeing it as the ring from the wedding that failed.”
“What do you see?”
“A reminder.”
“Of?”
“The difference between promising something and being ready to live it.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
Daniel put the ring box in his pocket.
Not as a proposal.
Not yet.
Two months passed.
Then, on a quiet Sunday morning, Claire found Daniel and Bella whispering in the backyard.
“What are you two doing?”
“Nothing!” Bella shouted.
Daniel looked guilty.
Claire crossed her arms.
“You are terrible criminals.”
Bella ran inside.
Daniel stayed.
He looked at Claire.
“I was going to do this differently.”
Her heart began pounding.
He reached into his pocket.
The same ring box.
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel did not kneel immediately.
Instead he stood in front of her.
“Before I ask anything, I need you to know this isn't the same promise.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
He continued.
“At the first wedding, I thought love meant knowing exactly who we were and exactly what our future would be.”
He shook his head.
“I was wrong.”
Claire laughed softly through tears.
“I promised forever before I understood yesterday.”
Daniel opened the box.
“I understand more now.”
“Not everything.”
“No.”
“Good.”
He smiled.
“I know what you did.”
Claire's smile disappeared slightly.
“I know what happened to Henry. I know what you hid. I know how you were controlled. I know the choices that were still yours.”
Tears ran down Claire's face.
“And?”
“And I know what you've done since.”
Daniel finally knelt.
“I am not asking you to become the woman I thought I was marrying.”
Claire covered her mouth.
“I’m asking the woman you became.”
Bella burst through the back door.
“Say yes!”
Claire laughed.
“Bella!”
“What? Daniel said wait!”
Daniel shook his head.
“Worst assistant ever.”
Claire looked at him.
Then at the ring.
She thought about the ceremony lawn.
Henry’s name.
The magnolia.
The police tape.
Courtrooms.
Therapy.
Broken bowls.
Crayon boundaries.
Truth.
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Relief.
He slid the ring onto her finger.
This time it touched her hand.
Bella screamed.
“Wedding!”
Claire pulled Daniel up and kissed him.
Bella wrapped both arms around their legs.
No guests.
No flowers.
No orchestra.
Just the three of them in a backyard that belonged to no dynasty.
Later, Claire turned the ring slowly.
Daniel noticed.
“Regret?”
“No.”
“Fear?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Me too.”
Claire leaned against him.
“Good.”
The wedding would be small.
Rebecca.
Tessa.
Maya.
A few friends.
No estate.
No grand ballroom.
Bella requested cake with strawberries.
Claire agreed.
Then Bella made one more request.
“Can Henry have chair?”
Claire’s eyes filled.
Daniel crouched beside her.
“What do you mean?”
“Not empty-sad chair.”
Bella thought carefully.
“Picture chair.”
Claire understood.
A small table with photographs of Evan and Henry.
Not a symbol of darkness.
A place for memory.
“Yes,” Claire said.
Bella smiled.
“Good.”

The first wedding had been destroyed by Henry's name.
The second would make room for it.
