Chapter 11 - James Never Went BackJames lived until 1971.

He saw Ruth graduate.

Saw her teach.

Saw her marry.

Held all three of his grandchildren.

He never returned to Calloway Farm.

Ruth once asked why.

“I already know where it is.”

“That isn’t what I mean.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

James looked at her.

“Some things are better when you don’t stand around waiting to be thanked.”

Ruth smiled.

“That sounds like Clyde.”

James nodded.

“That’s the idea.”

He continued saving money almost until the end of his life.

Ruth once asked:

“What are you saving for now?”

James smiled.

“I don’t know.”

That answer no longer confused her.
