Chapter 16 - The Choice Alyssa MadeRebecca took Daniel back to her office.

She closed the door.
“I didn’t hide this to protect Evelyn.”
“Then why?”
“Because Alyssa asked me to wait until the foundation investigation became relevant.”
“It’s relevant.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca opened a safe.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
“Alyssa drafted three versions of her estate plan during her illness.”
“I know.”
“What you don’t know is why.”
Daniel waited.
“In the first version, Evelyn was named Mia’s backup guardian if something happened to you.”
Daniel stared.
“That makes sense.”
“In the second version, Alyssa removed her.”
“When?”
“Two months before she died.”
“After the argument?”
“Yes.”
“And the third?”
“Alyssa added a written memorandum explaining why.”
Rebecca handed it over.
Alyssa had written that she loved her mother.
That sentence appeared first.
Then came the rest.
I also fear her.
Daniel sat down.
Alyssa described Evelyn’s lifelong pattern of controlling relationships through money, guilt and reputation.
She did not claim Evelyn had ever physically harmed her.
Instead, she described something subtler.
Evelyn paid tuition, then demanded obedience.
Evelyn funded weddings, then chose guest lists.
Evelyn gave gifts, then kept score.
When Alyssa married Daniel, Evelyn considered every holiday spent with Daniel’s family an insult.
When Mia was born, Evelyn began speaking as though the child belonged partly to her.
The final paragraph was devastating.
If I die, Mom will be grieving. Grief may make her more loving. It may also make her more controlling. Daniel, do not confuse her pain with authority over our daughter.
Daniel lowered the paper.
“Why didn’t Alyssa tell me?”
“She was dying.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
Rebecca looked down.
“She was afraid.”
“Of Evelyn?”
“Of leaving you with one more burden.”
Daniel stood and walked toward the window.
Everyone had protected him.
Alyssa.
Grace.
Rebecca.
And by protecting him, they had left him blind.
“She should have trusted me.”
Rebecca did not argue.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned.
“And you?”
“I made a professional judgment I now regret.”
Daniel was furious.
But unlike Evelyn, Rebecca did not manipulate him.
She accepted the accusation.
“I should have told you earlier,” she said.
That honesty stopped him.
Daniel sat.
“What else?”
“Nothing about Alyssa’s estate.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at the letter again.
Alyssa had removed Evelyn as guardian before she died.
Evelyn had known.
That mattered.
It meant her guardianship petition after the pool incident was not simply a grieving grandmother stepping forward.
She was seeking a role Alyssa had explicitly denied her.
Later that evening, Daniel returned to the rental house.
Mia was asleep.
Cooper lay outside her door.
Daniel sat on the floor beside him.
“You knew before I did.”
Cooper’s tail moved once.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Everybody knew before I did.”
His phone rang.
Detective Cole.
Leonard Shaw had requested a meeting with prosecutors.
“He wants a deal,” Cole said.
Daniel stood.
“In exchange for what?”
“He says he’ll testify.”
“Against Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
Only dread.
“About the foundation?”
“About everything.”
Cole paused.
“Including the pool.”
Daniel looked toward Mia’s room.
“What does he know?”
May you like
Cole’s voice became quiet.
“He says the near-drowning was planned.”
