Chapter 2 - The Call That Came Too Soon

Claire Bennett asked Dr. Brooks to remain in the room.

Emily immediately understood why.

There would be no private conversation now.

No casual explanation.

Every sentence mattered.

Claire sat in a chair across from the examination bed while Emily continued holding Sophie.

“When did you first notice the bruise?”

“Thirty seconds before you walked in.”

Claire typed something onto her tablet.

“And the makeup?”

“Same time.”

“Who had access to Sophie during the last forty-eight hours?”

Emily swallowed.

“My husband. Me. My sister Rachel.”

“Anyone else?”

“No.”

“Daycare?”

“She doesn’t go to daycare yet.”

“Babysitter?”

“No.”

Claire kept typing.

Emily hated the sound.

“What did Rachel tell you?”

Claire looked up.

“I’ll get to that.”

“No. Please. You just walked into a room and told me my sister accused me of hurting my child. I need to know what she said.”

Dr. Brooks spoke gently.

“Emily—”

“I need to know.”

Claire studied her for several seconds.

“She reported that she had concerns about Sophie’s safety.”

“What concerns?”

“She said you had been overwhelmed recently.”

Emily stared.

“I have a six-month-old. Of course I’m tired.”

“She said you sometimes lose your temper.”

“That’s a lie.”

“She said she saw you grab Sophie roughly two nights ago.”

Emily almost laughed.

It came out as something uglier.

“That never happened.”

Claire’s eyes remained steady.

“She also said she believed Sophie might have an injury on her leg.”

Silence.

Dr. Brooks stopped writing.

Emily felt every hair on her arms rise.

“She said that?”

“Yes.”

“Before you found the bruise?”

Claire nodded once.

Emily turned toward Dr. Brooks.

“You heard me. I didn’t know.”

“I know what you told me,” Dr. Brooks said.

“No. Rachel knew exactly where the injury was.”

Claire corrected her carefully.

“She said Sophie might have a leg injury. She did not specify a location beyond that.”

“Because she already knew.”

Claire said nothing.

Emily’s phone vibrated on the counter.

RACHEL.

Emily stared at the name.

Claire noticed.

“You can answer.”

Emily hesitated before pressing speaker.

“Hello?”

Rachel’s voice came through immediately.

“Emily? Oh my God. Are you at the hospital?”

Emily looked at Claire.

“You know I am.”

A pause.

“What do you mean?”

“You called them.”

Another pause.

Longer this time.

“Emily, I was worried.”

“You told them I hurt Sophie.”

Rachel exhaled dramatically.

“I told them what I saw.”

“You didn’t see anything.”

“I saw you frustrated.”

“When?”

“Tuesday.”

Emily’s mind snapped back.

Tuesday evening.

Sophie had cried for nearly forty minutes because she refused a bottle. Emily had walked around the kitchen bouncing her gently while Rachel sat drinking wine.

Emily had said, I swear, Soph, Mommy is running out of ideas.

Rachel had smiled.

That was all.

“You saw me holding my baby.”

“You were angry.”

“I was exhausted.”

“There’s a difference only until somebody gets hurt.”

Emily’s body went rigid.

Claire lifted one hand, silently asking her to stay calm.

Emily ignored it.

“You watched Sophie yesterday.”

“I did.”

“Did you see the bruise?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Emily closed her eyes.

“Did you put makeup on her?”

Rachel’s tone changed.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Emily, that’s insane.”

Dr. Brooks stepped closer to the phone.

“Rachel, this is Dr. Lena Brooks at St. Matthew’s Hospital.”

Silence.

Then Rachel’s voice softened instantly.

“Doctor, thank God. Is Sophie okay?”

“She’s stable.”

“What happened?”

Dr. Brooks looked at Emily.

“We found an area of cosmetic product over a bruise.”

Rachel gasped.

Perfectly.

Too perfectly.

“Oh my God.”

Emily felt sick.

“Rachel.”

“What?”

“You told them about Sophie’s leg before anyone here knew.”

“I told them what I suspected.”

“Based on what?”

“I saw how you treated her.”

“You’re lying.”

“Emily, please don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Turn everyone against me because you’re scared.”

Emily’s hand shook around the phone.

Rachel lowered her voice.

“I’m trying to protect Sophie.”

The call ended.

Emily stared at the black screen.

Claire broke the silence.

“I need you to understand what happens next.”

Emily looked up.

Claire explained that the hospital was legally required to report suspected child abuse to the state child-protection agency. Sophie would receive a full examination. Photographs would document the bruise. Emily and Daniel would be interviewed separately.

It did not mean Emily was guilty.

It did mean the accusation could not simply be ignored.

“Will you take my baby?”

Emily whispered.

Claire’s expression softened.

“No decision like that has been made.”

The words were meant to reassure her.

They did not.

Dr. Brooks placed the used gauze into an evidence bag rather than the trash.

Emily noticed.

“So you believe someone covered the bruise.”

“I believe there is cosmetic residue on the skin,” Dr. Brooks said. “And I believe it needs to be documented.”

Emily stared through the transparent plastic.

Beige makeup stained the white gauze.

Someone had hidden evidence on her six-month-old daughter.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time it was Daniel.

On my way. Rachel called me. She says you hurt Sophie. What the hell is happening?

Emily read the message twice.

Rachel had called Daniel too.

She had not merely reported Emily.

She was building an audience.

Emily looked at Claire.

“When exactly did Rachel call the hospital?”

Claire checked her tablet.

“Two fourteen this afternoon.”

Emily’s heart stopped.

Dr. Brooks had discovered the makeup at 2:31.

Seventeen minutes later.

May you like

Rachel had reported an injury seventeen minutes before anyone at the hospital found it.

And suddenly Emily knew exactly where she needed investigators to look first.
