Chapter 2 - The Door He Almost Kicked OpenDerek reached Franklin Ridge High School nineteen minutes later.

He remembered the exact number because he watched every traffic light like it was personally trying to keep him from his daughter.

He parked crookedly.

Left the driver’s door unlocked.

Ran through the main entrance.

The receptionist looked up sharply.

“Sir, you need to sign—”

“My daughter is Hailey Brooks.”

Her expression changed.

“Mr. Brooks—”

“Where is she?”

“Principal Evans is expecting you.”

That frightened him more than anything else.

Expecting him.

Meaning someone already knew.

Derek was led into the administrative office.

Hailey sat in a chair beside Principal Rachel Evans.

Her backpack was on the floor.

Her right hand rested in her lap beneath an ice pack wrapped in a paper towel.

The moment she saw her father, the expression she had been holding together collapsed.

“Dad.”

Derek crossed the office in three strides.

He crouched in front of her.

“Let me see.”

“I’m okay.”

“Hailey.”

She lifted the ice pack.

The red welt across her palm had darkened.

Derek’s face hardened.

Principal Evans stood.

“Mr. Brooks, I want you to know—”

He turned.

“Where is Mrs. Callahan?”

“She has been removed from the classroom pending review.”

“Where?”

“In another office.”

Derek looked toward the hallway.

Evans stepped slightly into his line of sight.

“I understand you’re angry.”

“You watched the video?”

“Yes.”

“So you understand I’m not angry because my daughter got a bad grade.”

“Yes.”

“My fourteen-year-old daughter got hit in front of a classroom because your teacher didn’t like who won a scholarship.”

Evans’s lips tightened.

“We are taking this extremely seriously.”

Derek laughed once.

There was nothing amused in the sound.

“Are you?”

Hailey touched his sleeve.

“Dad.”

He looked down.

That one word brought him back.

Hailey hated scenes.

Hated confrontation.

He knew that.

He sat beside her.

Principal Evans closed the door.

“I received the recording from Chloe Martin approximately twelve minutes ago. Chloe sent it to her mother as well. I immediately removed Mrs. Callahan from instruction.”

“Why was she allowed to teach her own daughter in a class tied to academic rankings?”

Evans hesitated.

Derek noticed.

“It isn’t prohibited under district policy if grading safeguards are followed.”

“Were they?”

“We’re going to determine that.”

Hailey looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Principal Evans folded her hands.

“It means we’re reviewing your recent grades, Madison’s grades, and the scholarship calculation.”

Hailey’s face changed.

“My scholarship?”

“No one is taking anything away from you.”

“You said you’re reviewing it.”

“Because if there was improper grading, we need to know.”

Derek stood again.

“No.”

Evans blinked.

“No what?”

“You don’t get to make my daughter think she did something wrong.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“Then say it clearly.”

Principal Evans looked at Hailey.

“You won the scholarship based on the records certified by the school and district. Nothing we have seen suggests wrongdoing by you.”

Hailey’s shoulders loosened slightly.

“Thank you,” Derek said.

His tone made clear that gratitude was not what he felt.

There was a knock.

Chloe stood outside with her mother.

Chloe looked terrified.

“Can I see Hailey?”

Evans allowed them in.

Chloe crossed the room and hugged Hailey carefully.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I should’ve done something sooner.”

“You recorded it.”

“I should’ve stood up.”

“You’re fourteen,” Derek said gently. “You did enough.”

Chloe looked at him.

“There’s more.”

The room went still.

She unlocked her phone.

“I didn’t start recording today because of the ruler.”

Hailey stared.

“What?”

Chloe looked at Principal Evans.

“I started recording because Mrs. Callahan has been saying stuff to Hailey for weeks.”

Principal Evans’s expression tightened.

“What kind of stuff?”

Chloe scrolled.

“I have three videos. And pictures.”

Hailey looked stunned.

“You recorded her before?”

“After the scholarship.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you kept saying you were imagining it.”

Chloe opened one clip.

Mrs. Callahan’s voice filled the office.

Hailey was answering a question about a novel.

Her answer was correct.

Mrs. Callahan said, “Amazing what confidence a little money can buy.”

Another clip.

Hailey handing in a paper.

Mrs. Callahan saying quietly, “Enjoy being everyone’s favorite while it lasts.”

Then a photograph.

A graded essay.

Beside it, Chloe’s paper.

The same rubric.

Nearly identical marks.

Derek looked at Hailey.

“You never told me.”

She stared at the floor.

“You were already working overtime.”

His anger changed shape.

Not smaller.

Sharper.

He had spent months telling Hailey they would get through things together.

Yet she had decided that protecting him meant carrying this alone.

Principal Evans asked Chloe to email every recording and photograph to the district’s compliance office.

Chloe nodded.

Her mother said, “Will Mrs. Callahan know Chloe provided them?”

“Eventually, probably.”

Chloe swallowed.

Hailey reached for her hand.

Derek watched them.

Then Principal Evans’s computer chimed.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?” Derek asked.

Evans did not answer immediately.

She clicked something.

Then something else.

Finally she looked at Hailey.

“The scholarship foundation just contacted us.”

Hailey’s stomach tightened.

“Why?”

Principal Evans turned the screen slightly.

The message had been sent that morning.

Before the ruler incident.

It was a formal challenge to Hailey Brooks’s scholarship eligibility.

The complaint alleged that Hailey had received “special academic consideration,” had “excessive medically unverified absences,” and may have been given unauthorized grade adjustments.

It requested that the scholarship be suspended and reconsidered.

The sender’s identity had been hidden behind an anonymous reporting form.

But the complaint included details only a teacher with access to Hailey’s records would likely know.

Derek stared at the screen.

“This was already happening.”

Principal Evans nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Hailey looked at the red welt across her palm.

For the first time, she understood something worse than the ruler.

Mrs. Callahan had not lost control in one angry moment.

She had been building a case against her.
