Chapter 2 - The Video Nobody Could Explain Away

Derek pushed through the main office doors with his phone still in his hand.
“I need to see my daughter.”
The receptionist looked up.
“Sir—”
“Hailey Brooks. Ninth grade.”
Something in Derek’s voice made her stop reaching for the visitor clipboard.
“I’m calling Principal Foster.”
“Call whoever you need to call.”
Derek placed the phone on the counter.
“But somebody needs to watch this.”
Principal Elaine Foster appeared less than two minutes later.
She was in her early fifties, controlled and serious, the kind of administrator students rarely saw lose composure.
That changed when Derek played Chloe’s video.
Foster’s lips parted slightly when the ruler struck Hailey’s palm.
But when Mrs. Callahan said, “That scholarship should have gone to my daughter,” the principal’s face hardened.
“Where is Hailey now?”
“In class, I assume.”
Foster immediately picked up the office phone.
“Send Nurse Patel to Room 214. Have Hailey Brooks brought to the health office. And ask Mrs. Callahan to report here without speaking to any students.”
Derek leaned forward.
“You’re separating them?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Foster looked at him.
“Mr. Brooks, I need you to let us handle this correctly.”
“My daughter was hit by a teacher because she won a scholarship.”
“I saw the video.”
“Then you understand why I’m standing here.”
“I do.”
Her calm answer disarmed him more than an argument would have.
Ten minutes later, Derek found Hailey sitting in the nurse’s office with an ice pack wrapped in a towel.
The moment she saw him, the strength went out of her face.
“Dad.”
Derek crossed the room.
He crouched in front of her instead of hugging her immediately.
“Can I see your hand?”
Hailey hesitated, then opened her fingers.
A red line crossed the center of her palm.
Derek closed his eyes for half a second.
When he opened them again, his anger had changed.
It was colder.
“Did this happen once?”
Hailey looked away.
“That part happened once.”
“That part?”
She said nothing.
Derek glanced at Nurse Patel, who quietly stepped into the adjoining room.
“What else happened?”
“Since the scholarship?”
Hailey nodded.
“She started marking things wrong that used to be right. She moved me away from Chloe. She told me I was getting arrogant. Last week she gave me a zero for participation because I didn’t answer when Madison was talking.”
Derek stared.
“You never told me.”
“You work twelve-hour shifts.”
“That is not an answer.”
Hailey’s eyes filled.
“You’re already tired all the time.”
Derek’s anger cracked.
He sat beside her.
“You never protect me by hiding when somebody is hurting you.”
Hailey wiped her cheek.
“I thought if I ignored it, she’d stop.”
A knock sounded.
Principal Foster entered with Assistant Principal Mark Reynolds.
Foster sat across from them.
“Mrs. Callahan has been removed from class pending investigation.”
Derek gave a short, humorless laugh.
“Pending?”
“We have procedures.”
“You have a video.”
“We also have district employment rules, student safety procedures, evidence preservation, and reporting obligations. I want this handled in a way no one can undo later because we rushed.”
That made Derek pause.
Foster continued.
“I have contacted the district office. Because physical discipline is prohibited under district policy, we’re also required to document the incident separately from the employment investigation.”
“Police?”
“Possibly. A school resource officer will take the report.”
Hailey stiffened.
“I don’t want everyone talking about me.”
Foster turned toward her.
“You have a right to privacy, Hailey.”
The office door opened again.
Mrs. Callahan walked in.
She stopped when she saw Derek.
For the first time since the scholarship announcement, Hailey saw uncertainty in her teacher’s face.
Mrs. Callahan recovered quickly.
“This has been blown completely out of proportion.”
Derek stood.
Principal Foster stepped between them.
“Mr. Brooks.”
He stopped.
Mrs. Callahan crossed her arms.
“It was classroom discipline.”
“You hit my daughter.”
“I tapped her hand.”
Derek picked up his phone.
“The video has sound.”
Mrs. Callahan’s expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But Hailey saw it.
Fear.
Mrs. Callahan looked at Hailey.
“Who recorded me?”
Foster’s voice became sharp.
“That is not a question you will ask any student.”
“I have a right to know if students are secretly filming—”
“You are currently directed not to contact students involved in this matter.”
Mrs. Callahan stared at the principal.
Then she made a mistake.
“What about the scholarship?”
The room went quiet.
Foster frowned.
“What about it?”
Mrs. Callahan’s jaw tightened.
“I’m saying this entire situation is being framed around one emotional comment.”
Derek stepped forward.
“One emotional comment?”
Foster raised a hand.
“Enough.”
Mrs. Callahan grabbed her bag.
As she turned toward the door, Hailey noticed something.
Her teacher was not looking at Derek.
She was looking at the laptop sitting on Principal Foster’s desk.
Specifically at the scholarship ranking spreadsheet open on the screen.

And for the first time, Hailey wondered whether Mrs. Callahan had done more than resent the result.
She wondered whether Mrs. Callahan had tried to change it.
