Chapter 12 - The Deal Vanessa WantedVanessa sat in a federal interview room in Philadelphia wearing gray sweatpants and a borrowed sweatshirt.

Daniel did not see her.

He was not permitted inside.

Keller attended remotely while federal agents questioned her.

Nathan remained with Daniel in a waiting room.

Three hours passed.

Daniel paced.

Finally Keller came out.

“She’s talking.”

“What does she want?”

“Protection.”

“From Mercer?”

“Yes.”

Daniel laughed.

“She helped him.”

“She says she has been trying to leave the arrangement for months.”

“After accepting his money?”

“Yes.”

“After marrying me?”

“Yes.”

“After puncturing Grace’s vest?”

Keller’s silence answered.

Daniel leaned against the wall.

“What is her explanation?”

“She says Mercer threatened to expose her involvement in the corporate scheme if she refused.”

“That’s not an explanation.”

“No.”

“Why Grace?”

Keller opened a folder.

“The sale.”

Daniel waited.

“Meridian couldn’t acquire Whitmore Development while Grace’s trust retained its eighteen-percent position and certain shareholder protections. If Grace died, those shares reverted to you.”

“I know.”

“Mercer believed you would become emotionally incapacitated and temporarily step away.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“He wanted Pierce as interim chairman.”

“Yes.”

“And the board would approve the sale.”

“Yes.”

“What about Vanessa?”

“She would receive the success payment.”

Daniel looked away.

Seven and a half million dollars.

Keller continued.

“After the sale, Mercer planned to pressure you into transferring additional estate rights to Vanessa.”

“And then?”

Keller hesitated.

Daniel understood before she spoke.

“Then I die.”

“He discussed creating what would look like a medication accident.”

Daniel laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the scale of it no longer seemed real.

“Was Vanessa going to do it?”

“She says no.”

“Did she say no to Grace?”

Keller did not answer.

Daniel turned back.

“What evidence does she have?”

“Audio recordings.”

Nathan looked up.

“Of Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Over the last two months.”

Daniel frowned.

“If she was recording him, she knew she was in danger.”

“Apparently.”

“Then why continue?”

“Fear. Money. Self-preservation. Pick one.”

Daniel sat.

There was something unbearable about the possibility that Vanessa had known the entire plan was monstrous and documented it while still carrying out her part.

Keller understood his expression.

“People can be victims and perpetrators at the same time.”

“She is not a victim of my daughter.”

“No.”

That mattered.

Daniel would not allow Vanessa’s fear of Mercer to erase what she did to Grace.

The audio changed the case.

In one recording, Mercer discussed the share reversion.

In another, he mentioned the security blackout.

And in the most damaging recording, he said:

“Three leaks. Slow enough she gets out there, fast enough she doesn’t come back.”

Vanessa’s voice answered:

“And if someone sees?”

“Then you’re the grieving stepmother who made a terrible equipment mistake.”

Daniel asked to hear it twice.

The second time hurt more.

Vanessa sounded nervous.

But she did not refuse.

Another recording contained Mercer describing the replacement vest.

“Once it’s done, original disappears. Clean one becomes evidence.”

The second vest.

Exactly as Keller suspected.

Federal agents obtained warrants for Mercer’s properties and offices.

He was arrested before dawn.

Charges related to conspiracy, obstruction, financial crimes and the planned attack followed.

Vanessa was also arrested.

She did not receive immunity.

Her cooperation would be considered later.

Daniel felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

When he returned home, Grace was asleep.

Rosa waited in the kitchen.

“They caught them?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

She sat down.

Daniel poured water.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Rosa asked, “Did Vanessa say why?”

“Money.”

Rosa shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That is the reason.”

“That is the price.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Money tells you what she was willing to accept. It doesn’t tell you why she was willing to do it.”

Daniel sat opposite her.

Rosa continued.

“Most people offered money to hurt a child would refuse.”

“I know.”

“So what was broken in her?”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“I don’t care.”

Rosa nodded.

“That is your right.”

But Daniel knew he did care.

Not because he wanted to forgive Vanessa.

Because Grace would eventually ask.

Children grew.

Questions became sharper.

One day “Why Vanessa not want me safe?” would become something much harder.

Daniel wanted an answer that did not reduce evil to a dollar amount.

The next morning, prosecutors informed him Vanessa wanted to speak with him.

He refused.

Then she sent a letter through her attorney.

Daniel almost threw it away.

Nathan advised him not to read it until he felt ready.

He waited two days.

Then opened it.

Daniel,

I know there is nothing I can say about Grace that will make you hate me less.

You should hate me.

But there is one thing you must understand before Mercer begins rewriting the story.

I was sent to meet you.

That part is true.

I accepted money.

That is true.

But I did not expect to love you.

Daniel stopped reading.

His hands tightened.

He continued.

I also did not expect Grace to love me.

That made everything worse, not better.

Mercer did not control me with one threat. He controlled me with every lie I had already told. Every month I stayed, leaving became more expensive.

Then came the company sale.

I told myself the pool plan would fail.

I told myself someone would see.

I told myself Grace was a strong swimmer.

All of those were lies I used because the truth was unbearable.

The truth is that I chose myself over a three-year-old child.

Daniel lowered the letter.

He could not continue.

Hours later, he finished.

The final paragraph contained no request for forgiveness.

Only one sentence:

The moment I smiled at the pool was the moment I became exactly the person I had spent my life pretending I wasn’t.

Daniel folded the letter.

Then he carried it to the fireplace.

He almost burned it.

Instead, he put it inside the evidence box Nathan had given him.

Not for Vanessa.

For Grace.

Someday, his daughter might want the truth.

May you like

Daniel would not hide it from her.

But he would decide when she was old enough to carry it.
