Chương 10 - Box 317

Claire insisted on accompanying her.

The bank required death documentation, estate records and proof that Mia was authorized to access the box.

Two hours later, an employee carried a long metal container into a private room.

Mia placed the key in the lock.

Her hands trembled.

Inside were five folders.

No jewels.

No cash.

No dramatic confession.

Just paper.

Exactly what Thomas Bennett would have considered valuable.

The first folder contained correspondence with Pierce Mercer from 2018.

The second contained draft loan agreements.

The third contained Thomas’s handwritten notes.

The fourth contained copies of Bellweather’s reorganized operating documents.

The fifth contained letters addressed separately to Evelyn, Lauren and Mia.

Mia stared at hers.

Claire said quietly, “That is personal. Read it alone if you want.”

Mia shook her head.

“Not yet.”

They began with the financial records.

Pierce Mercer’s original proposed loan had included a hidden development option allowing Mercer Coastal to purchase a substantial portion of Bellweather if Thomas defaulted.

Thomas discovered it before signing.

His notes were furious.

Pierce says this is standard. It is not. Evelyn introduced him believing he was helping. I believe Pierce saw distress and tried to turn it into leverage.

Mia looked at Claire.

“So Mother told the truth.”

“About that part.”

Another note:

I will not mortgage Bellweather to save hotels. Buildings can be sold. Land cannot be recreated.

Mia swallowed.

That sounded like him.

Then she found a document dated six weeks before Thomas changed the LLC.

A letter from Pierce.

You are allowing sentiment to destroy wealth. One day your daughters will understand what you refused them.

Mia read it twice.

The same language Grant used.

Potential.

Value.

Opportunity.

This was not a new obsession.

The Mercers had wanted Bellweather for eight years.

Claire opened another file.

“Mia.”

Inside was a spreadsheet listing payments.

One stood out.

$250,000 — Mercer Coastal — Consulting Retainer — E. Bennett

Mia stared.

“My mother received money?”

The payment dated from 2018.

Claire examined accompanying documents.

“It may have been legitimate.”

“For what?”

“Consulting.”

“My mother wasn’t a consultant.”

They kept reading.

Evelyn had signed an agreement introducing Mercer Coastal to hospitality contacts during the attempted financing.

Thomas had handwritten beside it:

Evelyn says she did not understand this would create conflict. I believe her, but she must never negotiate Bellweather matters again.

Mia sat back.

Her father had forgiven her mother.

But he had removed her authority.

Now Evelyn had repeated the same mistake.

Eight years later.

With the same family.

Claire opened the final corporate folder.

A handwritten memo was clipped inside.

If Pierce ever approaches the girls directly, Mia must know everything.

Mia closed her eyes.

“He expected this.”

“Maybe.”

“No. He feared it.”

Claire nodded.

Mia finally opened the letter addressed to her.

Thomas’s handwriting filled three pages.

He told her he was sorry for placing responsibility on her.

He explained that controlling ownership was not a reward.

It was protection.

Lauren will think I chose you over her. I did not. I chose the person most likely to say no when everyone else wants an easy yes.

Mia covered her mouth.

Claire looked away to give her privacy.

She kept reading.

Do not let Bellweather become a weapon between you and your sister. Give her income. Give her a voice. But do not give anyone power merely because they demand it. Power is responsibility, not proof of love.

Mia’s eyes blurred.

The final paragraph hurt most.

Your mother loves you both, but fear has always made her vulnerable to people who promise certainty. Do not hate her for it. But never let her fear make decisions for you.

Mia folded the letter slowly.

For years she had resented her father for leaving her with responsibility.

Now she understood.

He had not believed Mia was stronger.

He had believed she was harder to pressure.

Claire finished photographing the records for preservation.

Then her phone rang.

Deputy Foster.

Claire answered.

Her face changed.

“What happened?”

She listened.

Then looked at Mia.

“They arrested Lauren.”

Mia stood.

“For the push?”

“Yes.”

“Today?”

“Yes.”

Claire listened again.

Then frowned.

“What?”

Mia waited.

Claire ended the call.

“What is it?”

“They searched Lauren’s hotel suite with a warrant.”

“And?”

“They found a second laptop.”

Mia’s heartbeat accelerated.

“What was on it?”

“Draft versions of the forged authorization.”

Mia closed her eyes.

Claire continued.

“And emails.”

“With Grant?”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

Claire looked at her.

“One email from Lauren says, ‘If Mia won’t sign, we’ll make sure she has no choice.’”

Mia stared at the metal box.

May you like

Her father had spent his last years protecting the island from exactly this pressure.

And now Lauren had written the plan down in her own words.
