Chương 24 - No More Protection Without Permission

Claire showed Marcus the notebook.

He did not become defensive.

That almost made it harder.

“You decided not to tell me.”

“Yes.”

“You wrote that losing me might be easier.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus sat in the empty private dining room.

“Because if I explained enough for you to understand, I risked exposing details your family’s lawyers were trying to contain.”

“You could have asked whether I wanted protection.”

“I thought I knew.”

“Exactly.”

Marcus looked down.

Claire continued.

“You were different from Dad and Evan in a lot of ways.”

“I know where this is going.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“We all decided information for you.”

“Yes.”

Marcus exhaled.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire sat across from him.

“I don’t want you apologizing because you think it earns us marriage.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Good.”

“What do you want?”

Claire thought carefully.

“A rule.”

He smiled faintly.

“You and rules now.”

“Yes.”

“What rule?”

“No protection without permission unless there is an immediate safety emergency.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“That sounds drafted by counsel.”

“I own voting shares now.”

“Terrifying.”

She smiled.

“Can you do that?”

“Tell you things that might hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Even when I think withholding protects you?”

“Yes.”

Marcus nodded.

“I can try.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“You can promise to tell me when you’re tempted not to tell me.”

That was more realistic.

He understood.

“I promise.”

She held out her hand.

He took it.

Then Marcus said:

“My rule.”

“You get one?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

“If you think money is creating a power imbalance, say it before turning me into the poor boyfriend again.”

Claire winced.

“Fair.”

“And if I refuse help because I’m ashamed, call me on it.”

“Also fair.”

They had finally translated their original relationship failures into language.

Not destiny.

Skills.

Six months later, Marcus proposed.

Not outside Aurelia.

Not in a penthouse.

At Renee’s house after Sunday dinner.

His mother was watching television loudly in the next room.

Marcus stood in the kitchen.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“I had a better speech.”

“What happened?”

“I forgot it.”

She laughed.

He pulled out a ring.

“I don’t need you to save me.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I don’t need to prove anything by choosing you.”

She began crying.

Marcus continued:

“I know what you’re like when you’re cruel.”

Claire laughed through tears.

“Great proposal.”

“You know what I’m like when I’m controlling.”

“Also great.”

“And I still want the ordinary days.”

Claire looked at him.

“That part was good.”

“Thank God.”

“Yes.”

“Yes what?”

“Yes, Marcus.”

Renee shouted from the next room:

“Did she say yes?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Claire laughed.

“Yes, Mrs. Reed!”

“Good! He spent too much on that ring!”

Marcus yelled:

“Mom!”

Claire looked at the diamond.

Then at Marcus.

“How much?”

“Absolutely not.”

Their laughter filled the kitchen.

The wedding took place eight months later.

Small.

Richard walked Claire halfway down the aisle.

Then stopped.

Claire walked the rest herself.

It had been her idea.

Richard understood.

Helen cried.

Evan did not attend, though he sent a card.

Gregory sent nothing from prison.

Marcus’s restaurant employees occupied an entire row.

No dramatic revelation.

No scandal.

Just a wedding between two people who had already seen each other without flattering stories.

One chapter remained.

And it began where everything had restarted.

May you like

Outside Aurelia.

At night.
