Chapter 16 - The Side Agreement

Northline’s board hired outside investigators.

They wanted distance from Adrian and Vanessa.

Their report was devastating.

The company had approved a legitimate acquisition proposal.

Adrian had secretly added side consultants without full disclosure.

The payments to Vanessa were hidden through V Lane Advisory.

Northline executives knew the trust complicated the transaction.

There was no evidence they knew anyone planned violence.

Daniel accepted that.

He had no need to invent villains where evidence did not support them.

The true side agreement was enough.

Vanessa would receive $600,000 immediately after closing.

Another $300,000 if Daniel invested part of the proceeds into a Northline redevelopment fund.

Adrian would receive more than two million.

The financial motive was no longer theoretical.

It had signatures.

Dates.

Accounts.

And deadlines.

The prosecution’s theory became clear.

Vanessa had debt.

She feared divorce or reduced inheritance.

She resented Nora and Lauren.

She had a concealed financial interest in removing the trust restriction.

She studied the pool.

Disabled safety systems.

Cleared staff.

Pushed Nora.

Removed the ladder.

Hid it.

Returned while Nora remained trapped.

Then lied to Daniel while pretending to search.

No single piece proved everything.

Together they formed a structure.

Daniel began to understand why Monroe had refused to rush.

A strong case was not a hammer.

It was a wall.

Every piece supported another.

Vanessa’s defense developed its own structure.

Price argued the financial crimes were separate.

Fraud did not equal attempted murder.

Vanessa’s return to the property proved she was concerned, not cruel.

The missing ladder could have been removed due to panic.

Nora’s memory could have changed after repeated adult conversations.

Daniel hated hearing it.

But the defense was doing its job.

One afternoon Price’s investigator asked Daniel to sit for a civil deposition connected to the divorce.

Rebecca objected to several questions.

Did Daniel still love Lauren when he married Vanessa?

Did he compare Vanessa to Lauren?

Had he threatened to remove Vanessa from his will?

Had he ever argued with Vanessa about Nora?

Daniel answered carefully.

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Price eventually asked, “Did you ever tell Vanessa that Nora would always come before her?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The week before our wedding.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she respected that.”

Price paused.

“Perhaps she later felt she never truly became your family.”

Daniel stared.

“That would give her the right to leave.”

Nothing more needed to be said.

That evening Rebecca praised his restraint.

“I wanted to throw the table.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“You were gripping it.”

Daniel laughed.

The laugh surprised him.

It had been months since laughter did not feel like betrayal.

At Claire’s house, Nora was learning to put her face into a bowl of water.

Dr. Lee called it a tiny step.

Daniel sat beside her.

Nora dipped her chin.

Then her lips.

Then pulled back.

“No eyes.”

“Okay.”

“No push.”

“Never.”

She looked at him.

Daniel corrected himself.

“No one is allowed to push you into water. We always ask and make sure it’s safe.”

Nora nodded.

She tried again.

Milo watched from three feet away.

Afterward Nora proudly announced, “I did mouth.”

Daniel hugged her.

“You did.”

That night Rebecca called.

Adrian’s cooperation had uncovered Vanessa’s final financial secret.

The $75,000 Northline advance had not gone toward her debts.

Vanessa transferred it somewhere else.

“To whom?” Daniel asked.

Rebecca exhaled.

“A private investigator.”

Daniel frowned.

“Investigating what?”

“You.”

The investigator had spent six weeks documenting Daniel’s movements.

Meetings.

Bank visits.

Trips to Rebecca’s office.

Time with Nora.

Vanessa had been watching him before Halloween.

Not because she feared infidelity.

Because she wanted to know whether Daniel had discovered the financial scheme.

Daniel looked at the report.

October 29.

Subject visited Hale & Mercer, 3:12 p.m.–4:06 p.m.

That was the day Daniel met Rebecca about Nora’s education trust.

Vanessa apparently concluded he had discovered everything.

Two days later, Nora went into the pool.

The investigation had not merely given Vanessa information.

May you like

It had given her a deadline.
