Chapter 10 - The Camera Across the HallBy the first week of November, Waverly Commons had become a place Daniel dreaded.

Every entrance reminded him of the afternoon he had lost control.

Every column reminded him that someone might have been watching.

Every security camera reminded him of how much he had failed to see.

He returned anyway.

Detective Ruiz had asked him to identify several company representatives whose images appeared in preserved mall recordings.

Daniel met her near the jewelry store.

Marcus Bell stood a few feet away, holding a floor plan.

"Thank you for coming," Ruiz said.

"Have you found the missing footage?"

"Some of it. The digital forensics team recovered fragments from the recording server. We also have footage from independent store cameras."

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Are you okay?"

Marcus gave a tired smile.

"I'm still employed."

"Claire threatened you?"

"She offered me a promotion two hours away from my wife's doctors."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Marcus studied him.

"You didn't know?"

"No."

"Then now you do."

That was becoming a familiar sentence.

Daniel had spent years not knowing things that happened inside his own company.

Ruiz led them into the jewelry store.

Ruth Delgado greeted them at the counter.

"I was wondering when you'd come back."

She took them into a small office.

On the monitor was a video recorded from a fixed camera above the store entrance.

The investigators had already preserved an authenticated copy.

Ruiz started the footage.

At 3:39 p.m., Maya appeared beside Claire.

Claire crouched and spoke to her.

The child nodded.

Claire stood.

Then she looked toward the east corridor.

Her right hand lifted.

Two fingers extended.

A few seconds later, Ellis Vaughn appeared at the far edge of the image.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

Ruiz paused the recording.

"The angle doesn't tell us whether she's signaling to him," she said. "But the timing is relevant."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Play it again."

She did.

This time, he noticed Claire checking her phone immediately before lifting her hand.

"Can you see the screen?"

"No," Ruiz said. "We've requested the relevant communications records through legal process."

Daniel watched his sister walk behind the column.

Then the man in gray approached his daughter.

Maya stepped backward.

He reached for her hand.

Daniel had known this happened.

He had heard the description.

Seeing it was different.

He watched Maya resist.

Watched Ellis continue toward the exit.

Then Detective Cole entered the frame.

Cole moved quickly but deliberately.

He placed himself between the stranger and the corridor.

He separated the man's grip.

Maya stumbled back.

Cole guided her behind him.

The picture was unmistakable.

A man protecting a child.

Daniel pressed one hand against his mouth.

"Stop it."

Ruiz paused.

He leaned against the wall.

"I hit him."

Nobody answered.

Daniel stared at the frozen image of Cole shielding Maya.

"I hit him in front of my daughter."

Ruiz gave him a moment.

Then she said, "We have additional footage you should see."

She opened a second file.

A service-door camera showed Ellis walking away after the confrontation.

He moved through the east corridor and used an employee access badge at a staff-only door.

"That badge was assigned to Eastbridge," Ruiz explained. "It was activated the morning of the incident."

"Who approved it?"

"Claire's office."

Daniel shut his eyes.

The next recording showed Peter Rusk entering the service area thirty minutes before the incident.

He met Ellis near a vending machine.

The camera had no audio.

They spoke for less than a minute.

Then Rusk handed him something small.

A badge.

Ellis clipped it to his waistband.

Daniel opened his eyes.

"Peter knew."

"That recording supports prior contact between them," Ruiz said. "We'll determine the purpose through other evidence."

Ruth leaned against the counter.

"I have something else."

Ruiz looked up.

"What?"

"A woman came in last week asking whether we'd deleted Friday's video."

"Who?"

Ruth hesitated.

"Claire Whitaker."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Was she alone?"

"No."

"Who was with her?"

Ruth went behind the counter and returned with a business card.

She placed it in front of Ruiz.

Peter Rusk — Rusk & Bellamy LLP

"He said he represented the owners and wanted to make sure our records weren't being misunderstood."

Ruiz put the card into an evidence envelope.

Daniel stared at his name.

He had trusted Rusk with some of the most important legal decisions of his life.

Then his phone rang.

Claire.

He looked at Ruiz.

She nodded toward the door.

Daniel answered in the hallway.

"Hello."

"Where are you?" Claire asked.

"At the mall."

A silence.

"Why?"

"I'm looking at security footage."

Claire said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"I've seen Peter with Ellis."

Another silence.

Then Claire spoke, each word deliberate.

"You need to leave that place immediately."

"Why?"

"Because the police are going to make you think this is about me."

"Isn't it?"

"No, Daniel."

May you like

Her voice dropped.

"They're investigating the wrong Whitaker."
