Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the InvoicesCaleb Voss had always looked like a man who expected other people to solve his problems.

He was forty-seven, broad-shouldered, handsome in a careless way, and accustomed to talking loudly enough that disagreement felt impolite.

Daniel remembered lending him ninety thousand dollars four years earlier to help rescue a failing business.

Caleb had repaid the loan within eighteen months.

At the time, Daniel had admired his determination.

Now he wondered where the repayment money had come from.

The question haunted him as he entered a conference room at Lena's office.

Lena had arranged for Caleb's attorney to receive a formal preservation request from the foundation's independent counsel. Daniel was not attending an interview with Caleb; he was meeting Lena to review his own records.

On the table lay the old loan agreement.

Daniel stared at his signature.

"This one is real," he said.

Lena nodded.

"That isn't disputed."

"Caleb repaid it."

"Yes. We have your company's records showing the payments."

"Could he have used foundation money?"

"Possibly, but we can't assume it. We need to trace the sources."

Daniel rubbed his temples.

"When I met Sarah, Caleb had creditors calling him constantly."

"What kind of debts?"

"Failed businesses. Equipment leases. Personal loans."

"Did Sarah know?"

"Of course."

Lena studied him.

"Did she ever ask you to hire Caleb through the foundation?"

Daniel hesitated.

"She suggested he could help with emergency repairs."

"And you agreed?"

"I said he could apply like any other contractor."

"Did you tell the board about his relationship to Sarah?"

"No. I didn't think about it."

Lena wrote something down.

Daniel looked at her.

"Another failure."

"Another fact we need to disclose."

At that moment, his phone vibrated.

A message from Sarah.

Caleb is going to turn everyone against me.

Daniel stared.

Another followed.

You have no idea how long I've been trying to keep him from destroying our lives.

He showed Lena.

"Do you think she's telling the truth?"

"I think she's making a claim that should be investigated."

Daniel nearly laughed.

"You never give me the answer I want."

"I'm not paid to."

Across town, Sarah sat in Caleb's small office above a commercial garage.

Boxes of old business records lined the walls.

A broken printer occupied the corner.

Caleb paced beside the window.

"You told Daniel about Norwell," he accused.

"I didn't have to. Jordan took photographs."

Caleb stopped.

"That kid?"

"Don't talk about my son like that."

"Your son is the reason we're in this mess."

Sarah stood.

"No. Michael is the reason we're exposed. Jordan is just frightened."

Caleb laughed bitterly.

"You've been blaming children since this started."

Sarah's face flushed.

"Don't you dare."

"Who took Michael's phone?"

She said nothing.

"Who made him sign that ridiculous confession?"

"Because you told me his pictures could get us investigated!"

Caleb threw up his hands.

"And your solution was to threaten the owner's teenage son?"

Sarah looked away.

The room was suddenly quiet.

Caleb lowered his voice.

"We should've stopped last year."

Sarah turned.

"You said the contracts were legitimate."

"Some were."

"You said we could use subcontractors and make the paperwork work afterward."

He stared at her.

"And you were the person approving the payments."

They stood facing each other, both realizing that the old arrangement of mutual blame would no longer protect them.

Sarah reached for her handbag.

"I'm leaving."

Caleb blocked the narrow doorway without touching her.

"What are you going to tell your lawyer?"

"The truth."

He laughed.

"Which version?"

She met his eyes.

"The one where you took the money and lied about the work."

Caleb's smile disappeared.

"Be careful, Sarah."

"Move."

He stepped aside.

As she passed, he said, "If I'm going down, I'm not going alone."

Sarah left without answering.

That evening, Daniel received another message from the unknown number.

This time, it contained a photograph.

The image showed Daniel standing beside Caleb at a charity golf tournament.

Both men were smiling.

Below it was a caption:

Tell them how well you knew your contractor.

Daniel examined the picture.

It had been taken three years earlier.

He remembered the tournament.

Caleb had paid for his own ticket.

But in the context of the foundation's investigation, the photograph could be used to suggest Daniel had approved more than he actually knew.

He forwarded it to Lena.

Then he sat alone in the study.

Michael appeared in the doorway.

"Are you okay?"

Daniel looked up.

For a moment, he almost said yes.

The automatic answer.

The easy lie.

Instead, he said, "No, son. I'm worried."

Michael entered.

"About the foundation?"

"About that. About Sarah. About what I failed to see."

Michael sat across from him.

"Do you think they're going to blame you?"

"Some of it is my responsibility."

"But you didn't steal the money."

"No."

Daniel looked at his son.

"Not stealing it doesn't mean I did everything I should have done to protect it."

Michael considered.

"Mom always said doing the right thing wasn't the same as being perfect."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"She did."

Michael touched the photograph of Elena on the desk.

"Then maybe you can do the right thing now."

Daniel looked at him for a long moment.

He had spent weeks trying to protect Michael from the truth.

Now his son was showing him how to face it.

Then Michael asked a question Daniel had not considered.

"Dad, if Caleb was paid for houses he didn't fix, how many people are still waiting?"

Daniel looked at the audit summaries.

"Possibly dozens."

Michael nodded.

"Can we find out who they are?"

Daniel felt something shift inside him.

He no longer wanted only to defend his family.

He wanted to repair what had been broken.

"Yes," he said.

Then his phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

"Daniel, I need you to come to the foundation tomorrow."

"What's happened?"

Her voice was strained.

"We found evidence that somebody was warned about Cedar Creek long before Michael discovered those invoices."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Who?"

May you like

Evelyn answered quietly.

"Someone inside the foundation sent repeated warnings. And the final one was addressed to you."
