Chapter 22 - He Is Not Just an AnimalRaven was twenty-one when arthritis began affecting his right hind leg.

Doctor Reyes examined him.
“No more long rides.”
Emma nodded.
“Pain?”
“Manageable.”
“Work?”
“Light.”
Emma had known the day would come.
Knowing did not make it easier.
She moved Raven to the pasture nearest the house.
He still walked to the gate whenever her car arrived.
One autumn afternoon, Emma found Mark sitting on the fence beside him.
“You okay?”
Mark nodded.
Then shook his head.
Emma climbed up beside him.
For a while, they watched Raven graze.
Mark said:
“I still hear myself saying it.”
Emma knew immediately.
He’s just an animal.
“I don’t,” she said.
“I do.”
“Dad.”
“I thought anger could make the truth easier.”
Emma looked at him.
Mark continued.
“I needed money. I needed to believe selling him was like selling a truck.”
“You apologized.”
“That doesn’t erase it.”
“No.”
Mark looked surprised.
Emma smiled gently.
“It isn’t supposed to.”
She pointed toward Raven.
“But look.”
Raven lifted his head.
The sun caught gray hair around his muzzle.
Emma continued.
“You made a terrible decision.”
“Yes.”
“You changed.”
“I tried.”
“That’s all anyone gets.”
Mark’s eyes filled.
He laughed softly.
“You’re much nicer at twenty.”
“Twenty-one.”
“That explains it.”
Emma leaned against him.
Raven walked toward them.
Mark reached through the fence.
The horse placed his nose against Mark’s palm.
Mark whispered:
“You are not just an animal.”
Emma looked at him.
He shook his head.
“That’s still wrong.”
“What?”
“He is an animal.”
Mark stroked Raven’s face.
“And that was always enough.”
Emma felt tears come.
The sentence was better now.
Because it did not require Raven to save anyone.
Did not require him to be worth one hundred thousand dollars.
Did not require fame.
Pedigree.
Heroism.
He mattered because he was alive.
The rest was history.
That winter, Emma finished university.
She returned to Carter Ridge full-time.
Not because she was afraid to leave.
She had left.
Learned.
Returned by choice.
Rose’s letter stayed framed inside the farm office.
Love is not possession.
But neither is surrender.
Below it, Emma placed another line.
Written in her own handwriting.
Fear is not failure.
But it should never be the only person making the decision.
Mark read it.
“Person?”
Emma smiled.
“You know what I mean.”
Outside, Raven called from the pasture.
Emma went to him.
Slowly.
May you like
Because now he moved slowly too.
Neither of them needed to hurry.
