Chapter 15 - The Arrest

Victor was arrested at Hale Land headquarters the following morning.
Employees watched through glass conference-room walls as two investigators escorted him from his office.
He wore a charcoal suit.
No handcuffs were visible until they reached the elevator.
Daniel watched remotely from Naomi’s office.
Victor never looked toward the cameras.
He looked straight ahead.
Controlled to the end.
Eleanor voluntarily surrendered that afternoon.
Her lawyer negotiated release conditions.
She was not accused of putting Lily in the cage.
She was accused of participating in financial fraud, facilitating destruction of evidence, and obstructing an investigation.
Daniel gave a formal statement.
Rebecca gave one too.
So did Celia.
The company issued a public announcement describing “serious historical financial irregularities.”
By sunset, reporters stood outside the office.
Daniel hated every second.
His father had spent a lifetime protecting the Hale name.
Now the name filled television screens for exactly the reasons Samuel feared.
That evening Daniel sat at Lily’s bedside.
She held a stuffed rabbit beneath one arm.
“Uncle Vic coming?”
“No.”
“Grandma?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Not tonight.”
Lily considered this.
“Grandma bad?”
Daniel felt the inadequacy of adult language.
“No, sweetheart.”
Then he stopped.
He did not want to begin another generation with comforting lies.
“Grandma did something wrong.”
Lily’s eyebrows pulled together.
“Like timeout?”
Daniel almost smiled.
“Bigger than timeout.”
“Police?”
“Yes.”
Lily stared at her blanket.
Then she asked, “Daddy mad?”
“Yes.”
“At Lily?”
Daniel’s chest broke.
“No.”
He leaned closer.
“Never because of what happened outside. You did nothing wrong.”
She touched his cheek.
“Daddy looked pool.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.”
“I say don’t.”
“You did.”
“Bad bags.”
“Yes.”
Lily whispered, “Uncle Vic put bags.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
She pulled the rabbit closer.
“Uncle Vic splash bags.”
Daniel had assumed Victor dumped them.
But this was the first direct confirmation.
“Did you see him?”
Lily nodded.
“What happened after?”
“Lily say Mommy.”
“Then?”
“Uncle Vic say game.”
“What game?”
“Little house.”
Daniel struggled to keep his voice calm.
“He told you to go inside the cage?”
She nodded.
“Then click.”
The padlock.
“He locked it?”
“Yes.”
“Did he say anything else?”
Lily’s lip trembled.
“Stay quiet.”
Daniel felt rage so intense he had to look away.
Lily touched his face again.
“Daddy?”
“I’m okay.”
He was not.
But this lie was different.
It was temporary.
He kissed her forehead.
“You were very brave.”
The next day Ortiz arranged for a trained forensic interviewer to speak with Lily in an age-appropriate setting.
Daniel watched from another room.
Lily’s account remained simple.
Uncle Victor carried black bags outside.
Lily followed.
He told her they were playing.
He put her in the cage.
He locked it.
She cried.
He went inside.
Then Daniel came home.
Combined with physical evidence, Celia’s timeline, Victor’s presence, and recovered surveillance from a neighbor showing his car at the property, prosecutors added charges relating to unlawful restraint and child endangerment.
Victor’s attorney called the account unreliable.
Daniel expected that.
What he did not expect came later.
Naomi called him.
“Victor wants a meeting.”
“No.”
“He says he has information about Samuel’s final day.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Tell him to give it to prosecutors.”
“He says he’ll only give it to you.”
“Why?”
May you like
Naomi paused.
“Because he says Samuel left something for you that nobody else knows about.”
