Chapter 15 - Owen's Real Debt

Owen Cole stopped pretending when Detective Torres showed him Emily's message.
He stared at the printout.
“Vanessa told her?”
“Enough,” Torres said.
Daniel sat across from Owen in the interview room.
He had insisted on being present only after prosecutors approved it.
Owen looked exhausted.
“You said your serious debt began with the restaurants.”
“It got worse with the restaurants.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Owen rubbed his face.
“It started with gambling.”
Daniel said nothing.
Owen looked ashamed.
“Sports books. Private games. I was stupid.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred thousand at first.”
“At first.”
“Then more.”
“Grant paid it?”
“He arranged money.”
“Through Vanessa's company.”
“Yes.”
Daniel leaned back.
“So Grant wasn't only blackmailing Vanessa over fake invoices.”
“No.”
“He was keeping your creditors away.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Owen looked at him.
“Because Vanessa would do anything for me.”
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
Only understanding.
Grant had identified the pressure point years earlier.
Torres asked, “Did you ever communicate directly with Grant about Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“About Nora?”
Owen hesitated.
Daniel's gaze sharpened.
“Owen.”
“Not like that.”
“What does that mean?”
“He complained about the trust.”
“What did you say?”
“I told him Vanessa would never hurt Nora.”
“When?”
“Maybe a month ago.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Why would you tell him that unless hurting Nora had come up?”
Owen stared at the table.
Torres waited.
Finally, Owen whispered, “He asked how far Vanessa would go.”
Daniel's chair scraped the floor.
Torres lifted one hand.
“Sit.”
He did.
Barely.
“What exactly did Grant say?”
Owen's eyes watered.
“He said, ‘Would she burn the whole house down if that's what it took?’ I said no.”
“That metaphor referred to what?”
“The sale. The trust. Everything.”
“Did he mention Nora?”
“Later.”
Daniel's voice turned flat.
“How?”
“He said Nora was the lock on the company.”
Torres asked, “His words?”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa?”
Owen looked at Daniel.
“She called me the night before the pool.”
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“What did she say?”
“She was crying.”
“About?”
“She said Grant wanted something terrible.”
“Did she tell you what?”
“She said, ‘He thinks if Nora disappears, Daniel will finally be free.’”
Daniel stopped moving.
Torres asked, “What did you tell her?”
Owen's face twisted.
“I told her to stop talking to him.”
“Did you call Daniel?”
“No.”
“Police?”
“No.”
“Anyone?”
“No.”
Daniel stood.
This time Torres did not stop him.
He walked to the wall and pressed both hands against it.
Behind him, Owen said, “I didn't think she'd do it.”
Daniel turned.
“You all keep saying that.”
Owen flinched.
“Grant says he didn't think she'd do it. You didn't think she'd do it. Caroline didn't think she'd do it. Everybody saw pieces.”
“I know.”
“My daughter was three years old.”
“I know.”
“No. Stop saying that.”
Owen looked down.
Daniel returned to the table.
“Why did you leave with Grant after the police came?”
“He called me.”
“What did he say?”
“That Vanessa had ruined everything and I'd be next.”
“Why would you be next?”
“Because some of the money went through accounts in my name.”
“So you ran.”
“Yes.”
“Then he abandoned you.”
“Yes.”
Daniel almost said, That's who he is.
But Owen already knew.
Later that day, Rachel Monroe presented prosecutors' charging plan.
Vanessa would be arrested for attempted murder, child neglect, conspiracy, and financial fraud.
Grant would face conspiracy, wire fraud, embezzlement-related charges, forgery, and obstruction.
Owen would likely face financial charges but could receive consideration for cooperation.
Daniel listened.
Then asked, “What happens to Nora?”
Rachel looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“She becomes evidence.”
The room quieted.
“I don't want people repeatedly questioning her.”
“They won't.”
“She already told us what happened.”
Rachel nodded.
“A forensic child interview will be limited. We can use physical evidence, digital records, Vanessa's confession, and the recordings.”
Daniel exhaled.
That mattered more than punishment.
That evening, he moved temporarily into a smaller guesthouse on the estate with Nora and Lena.
The main mansion felt contaminated.
Every room contained a memory that had become suspicious.
Nora liked the guesthouse immediately.
“It tiny.”
Daniel smiled.
“For us, it is.”
Milo chose the rug beside Nora's bed.
Before sleep, Nora asked, “Nessa come?”
Daniel sat beside her.
“No.”
“Why?”
He chose his words carefully.
“Vanessa made a very dangerous choice. Grown-ups are handling it.”
Nora thought.
“She took ladder.”
“Yes.”
Nora's lower lip trembled.
Daniel touched her cheek.
“You didn't do anything wrong.”
She looked at him.
“Milo stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Milo good.”
“The best.”
Nora hugged the dog.
Later, Daniel found an email waiting from Priya.
Subject:
Recovered VCD badge logs.
He opened it.
Vanessa had entered Mercer House headquarters seventeen times before Daniel officially met her.
Most visits matched consulting work.
Three did not.
One occurred at 11:48 p.m.
Another at 12:22 a.m.
The last one was the night before Emily entered the hospital for her final admission.
Daniel clicked the attached surveillance still.
Vanessa walked through the executive hallway.
Grant followed behind her.
He carried a cardboard archive box.
Daniel enlarged the image.
Printed on the side:
SUTTON / EMILY — TRUST DRAFTS
He immediately called Priya.
“Where were they taking that box?”
“We don't know.”
“Is there more footage?”
“I'm checking.”
“Find it.”
Ten minutes later, another clip arrived.
Grant and Vanessa entered the document-shredding room.
Grant left twenty minutes later.
Vanessa did not.
She emerged almost an hour after that.
May you like
Alone.
And in her hands was one file Grant had apparently expected to be destroyed.
