Chapter 10 - What Grace Heard

Children did not provide information in orderly timelines.

Grace revealed things while coloring.

While eating cereal.

While searching for a missing sock.

The next important detail came while Rosa helped her build a blanket fort.

Grace placed a stuffed rabbit inside and announced, “He hides when Monica talks to Uncle Daniel.”

Rosa froze.

Ryan looked up from across the library.

“Uncle Daniel?”

Grace nodded.

Daniel was not her uncle.

But Ryan had called him Uncle Daniel affectionately for years.

“When did Monica talk to Uncle Daniel?” Ryan asked.

Grace crawled deeper into the fort.

“At night.”

“At our house?”

“Sometimes.”

Ryan lowered himself to the floor.

“Did you see him?”

“No.”

“Did you hear him on the phone?”

Grace nodded.

“What did they say?”

She shrugged.

Ryan knew better than to pressure her.

He returned to his chair.

Ten minutes later Grace said casually, “Monica said Daddy signs everything.”

Ryan and Rosa looked at each other.

“What else did she say?” Rosa asked gently.

Grace pushed the rabbit through a blanket opening.

“She said Uncle Daniel makes Daddy busy.”

Ryan's stomach tightened.

Grace continued playing.

“Then Monica said when I go on the airplane, Mommy's hotel can be sold.”

Ryan went completely still.

“Mommy's hotel?”

Grace looked at him.

“The big one with flowers.”

The Whitmore Hotel lobby displayed enormous white floral arrangements.

Claire had taken Grace there every Christmas.

“How do you know they meant that hotel?”

“Monica said Whitmore.”

Ryan immediately called Lydia.

By afternoon, a child forensic interviewer was scheduled.

Ryan was not allowed in the interview room.

That was deliberate.

Professionals needed to avoid parental influence.

Grace spoke for thirty-five minutes.

She repeated the same core memories.

Monica talking on the phone late at night.

Daniel’s name.

Daddy signing papers.

A trip.

Whitmore.

She also said something new.

“Monica said after the trip, Daddy would rest for a long time.”

The interviewer did not speculate.

Neither did Detective Cole.

Ryan did.

“Were they planning to kill me?”

“No evidence of that,” Cole said firmly.

“What does ‘rest for a long time’ mean?”

“It could mean anything.”

“That's convenient.”

“It's responsible.”

Ryan hated responsible answers.

Marcus later found a different explanation.

Monica had been documenting Ryan’s grief.

Not privately.

Strategically.

Emails to a therapist Ryan had briefly seen after Claire’s death had been obtained using forms that appeared to carry Ryan’s consent.

The records showed depression, insomnia, and grief.

Normal responses after losing a spouse.

But isolated from context, they could be distorted.

Monica had also kept a private log.

Ryan forgot dinner reservation.

Ryan became emotional discussing Claire.

Ryan yelled after Grace broke picture frame.

Ryan missed board call.

Individual events.

Reframed as evidence of decline.

The forged psychiatric report went further.

It converted grief into cognitive impairment.

Lydia understood the strategy.

“They weren't necessarily planning to physically harm you.”

Ryan waited.

“They were preparing to argue you were incompetent.”

“For the company?”

“And possibly for financial guardianship.”

Ryan felt cold.

“If I were declared incapacitated—”

“Monica could seek control of personal matters. Daniel could use instability at the top of the company to influence the board.”

“And Grace?”

“Her trust becomes vulnerable if the people around her manipulate the structure.”

Ryan looked at the pool through the library window.

The water had been drained for maintenance.

An empty blue rectangle remained.

Monica had built a story.

Ryan unstable.

Grace emotionally difficult.

Monica devoted.

Daniel responsible.

Claire paranoid.

Rosa jealous.

Every person who threatened them had been assigned a flaw that made the truth easier to dismiss.

Ryan finally saw the architecture.

The conspiracy was not built from one dramatic lie.

It was built from hundreds of believable ones.

That evening, Detective Cole called.

Digital recovery from Monica’s phone had produced a deleted voice message.

It was from Daniel.

Recorded three days before the pool incident.

His voice said:

You are getting too emotional about the kid. Stick to the plan. Once Ryan signs, take Grace on the trip. I’ll handle the board.

Then Monica replied:

She keeps ruining everything by asking about Claire.

Ryan listened twice.

The second time, he noticed something in Monica’s voice he had never heard clearly before.

Hatred.

Not of Grace alone.

Of Claire.

May you like

And Ryan suddenly wondered whether Monica had entered his life for money—

but stayed because she wanted to defeat a dead woman.
