Chapter 11 - The Board Contingency

The emergency Mercer Holdings board meeting was called for Monday.

Grant requested it.

Daniel learned from the corporate secretary.

The stated purpose was “governance concerns related to executive oversight and undisclosed family-office irregularities.”

Daniel almost admired the audacity.

Grant had spent two years creating the irregularities.

Now he wanted the board to blame Daniel for failing to oversee them.

Evelyn read the notice twice.

“He’s moving first.”

“He warned me.”

“That matters less than evidence.”

“What does he have?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel did.

Or at least he knew what Grant hoped to use.

Forged approvals.

Credentials in Daniel’s name.

Documents Daniel never read.

Trust reimbursements carrying his electronic signature.

If presented selectively, they could make Daniel look reckless or complicit.

Nadia began assembling a forensic timeline.

Marcus documented login locations.

Evelyn issued preservation letters to Grant, Steven, Victoria, BrightPath, and North Harbor.

Then something unexpected happened.

Steven Kline called.

Not Daniel.

Rosa.

She answered while preparing lunch.

“Mrs. Alvarez?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Steven Kline.”

Rosa froze.

“I know who you are.”

“I need to speak with Daniel.”

“Call him.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because every company line may be monitored.”

Rosa looked toward the hall.

“What do you want?”

“I saw your video.”

Her blood went cold.

“How?”

“Victoria sent it to Grant.”

Rosa nearly dropped the phone.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Why?”

“She knows you recorded her.”

Rosa lowered her voice.

“What do you want?”

“I want protection.”

“From who?”

Steven laughed nervously.

“Everyone.”

Rosa found Daniel in the study.

He took the phone.

“This is Daniel.”

Steven exhaled.

“I’m sorry.”

“That’s not enough.”

“I know.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m not telling you until my lawyer is involved.”

“Fine.”

“I copied the archive before it was wiped.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“Who ordered the wipe?”

Steven became quiet.

“Grant told me to clean up obsolete files.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

“Before Rosa’s video?”

“Yes.”

Daniel glanced at Evelyn.

That meant the deletion plan predated the family crisis.

“Did he tell you to wipe the archive yesterday?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Victoria.”

Daniel frowned.

“She doesn’t have admin access.”

“She has Grant’s emergency token.”

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Marcus whispered, “That would do it.”

Daniel returned to the phone.

“Why does Victoria have my brother’s token?”

Steven answered slowly.

“Because they trusted each other more than either of them trusted you.”

The sentence cut deeper than Daniel expected.

“What did you do for them?”

Steven began listing it.

He altered digital records.

Created reimbursement packets.

Routed approvals.

Established vendors.

Inserted Daniel’s duplicate credentials.

He claimed he never knew Ethan was being mistreated.

Daniel did not believe that absolved him.

“Why help them?”

Steven sounded ashamed.

“Grant offered me equity.”

“In what?”

“North Harbor.”

“So money.”

“Yes.”

“At least you’re honest now.”

Steven swallowed audibly.

“There’s something you don’t know.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Every time someone said those words, his life worsened.

“What?”

“Victoria was not originally part of the financial scheme.”

“When did she join?”

“Eight months ago.”

“The Linden Street house.”

“Yes.”

“What changed?”

“She found Grant’s losses. At first she threatened him.”

“And then?”

“She proposed a deal.”

Daniel looked toward the family photographs on the wall.

“What deal?”

“She would help make the missing money look like legitimate family and care expenses.”

“In exchange for?”

“A new estate structure.”

Daniel’s breathing slowed.

Steven continued.

“She wanted the house. Investment control. Financial security for Mason.”

“And Ethan?”

“She said Ethan already had enough.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Did she say anything else?”

Steven hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“She said once Ethan was placed in long-term care, Daniel would finally stop living like Claire was still in the house.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There it was.

Not simply greed.

Not simply control.

Jealousy of a dead woman.

Claire’s photographs.

Claire’s trust.

Claire’s son.

Claire’s house.

Victoria had entered a marriage with a widower and decided the only way to belong was to erase everything that came before her.

Steven continued.

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“Grant planned to use the board review to force you into a leave of absence.”

“For how long?”

“Long enough.”

“For him to become interim CEO.”

Daniel looked at the board notice.

Monday.

Four days away.

“What happens if the board refuses?”

Steven answered.

“Then he releases the forged documents publicly.”

Daniel sat back.

May you like

Grant was not merely hiding theft anymore.

He was holding Daniel’s identity hostage.
