Chapter 11 - The Pictures Behind the Wall

The photographs Elise had hidden were not wedding pictures or family portraits.

They were aerial images of South Harbor taken during different stages of redevelopment.

Adrian learned this from an archived email Helen recovered from Elise's professional account.

The message had been sent to an independent property appraiser.

Please compare the dates of these images with the dates listed in the environmental remediation invoices.

Helen spread the documents across a conference table.

Adrian examined the first photograph.

It showed South Harbor before redevelopment.

Old docks, abandoned warehouses, and a narrow strip of industrial land.

The second image showed extensive construction activity.

The third showed the completed luxury marina.

“What am I looking for?”

Helen pointed to a row of warehouses.

“These buildings were listed as hazardous structures requiring costly demolition. That expense contributed to the reduced acquisition price.”

“Okay.”

“According to Elise's notes, several structures had already been cleared before the underlying purchase was finalized.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why would that matter?”

“Because the costs and environmental risks were used to justify the price. If someone misrepresented their timing or amount, the financial disclosures may have been misleading.”

She placed a spreadsheet in front of him.

“The preliminary estimate is a twelve-million-dollar difference between the reported acquisition-related costs and the records Elise obtained.”

Adrian stared.

“Twelve million?”

“Potentially. These are not findings of wrongdoing yet. We need the actual invoices.”

“Graham managed those contracts.”

“Yes.”

“And Nathan?”

“His company signed several vendor certifications.”

Adrian leaned back.

“So Graham used Nathan to make the paperwork look legitimate.”

“That's one possibility.”

Helen opened another folder.

“There is also a connection to Harborstone.”

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“Of course there is.”

“An investment group associated with Harborstone bought interests in several intermediate property entities during the redevelopment.”

“Was that illegal?”

“Not automatically. But if internal information was misused or material disclosures were false, that's another matter.”

Adrian looked toward the window.

He'd spent years telling employees that Whitmore Marine Holdings represented integrity.

He'd given speeches about community investment.

Elise had warned him.

He hadn't listened.

“Why hide the photographs in our house?” he asked.

“Perhaps she believed documents stored at the company were being accessed.”

“Then who took them?”

Helen hesitated.

“We have a lead.”

She showed him a visitor log from a private records storage facility Elise had used.

A withdrawal had been requested six weeks earlier using a letter purporting to authorize access on behalf of her estate.

The request had been denied because the signature and identification requirements were incomplete.

The visitor had signed in as Nathan Bell.

Adrian stared.

“He tried to get her files.”

“Yes.”

“After she's been dead eighteen months.”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

Helen opened a final document.

“The pending eighteen-million-dollar transfer was part of a much larger proposed restructuring. Elise's old evidence could have raised questions about assets being valued in that transaction.”

Adrian understood.

Someone was trying to finish a deal before the past could surface.

His phone rang.

Celia.

“Adrian, are you sitting down?”

He stood immediately.

“What happened?”

“Junie's fine.”

He exhaled.

“Mom.”

“I'm sorry. I should've started with that.”

“What is it?”

“Corinne sent Junie a gift.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“What kind of gift?”

“A doll. It arrived with a note.”

“Don't give it to her.”

“I haven't.”

“What did the note say?”

Celia's voice grew uneasy.

I'm sorry I frightened you. Sometimes people make mistakes when they're scared. I hope you can forgive me.

Adrian stared at the conference table.

Helen watched his expression change.

“Adrian?”

He held up a hand.

“Mom, put everything somewhere safe. Don't throw it away. I'll call the detective.”

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“The doll is wearing a yellow dress.”

Adrian's blood ran cold.

Celia continued quietly.

“The same one Junie wore on the yacht.”

He looked toward the window.

For a terrible moment, he could see his daughter's fingers slipping against the metal.

“Is there anything else in the package?” he asked.

Celia swallowed.

“Yes.”

“A photograph.”

“Of what?”

“Junie standing on the bow.”

Adrian gripped the edge of the table.

May you like

“Taken when?”

“Right before she fell.”
