Chapter 11 - The Deleted Angle

The missing camera footage was not gone.
Not completely.
Mercer Luxe’s security system stored low-resolution redundancy on a separate server.
IT recovered fragments.
No audio.
Poor image quality.
But enough.
Daniel watched with outside counsel.
7:43 p.m.
Celeste stood near Emma.
She gestured toward the bench.
Emma looked down.
Celeste’s foot moved.
The shoebox fell.
7:44.
Emma picked it up.
Celeste led her closer to the champagne display.
Not directly beneath it.
Close.
7:45.
Leonard entered frame.
Celeste saw him.
Their eyes met.
Only one second.
Then Celeste turned away.
Daniel stopped playback.
“They knew each other.”
Counsel said:
“Maybe.”
Daniel glared.
“Please.”
“We describe what the video supports.”
Fine.
Continue.
7:46.
Rosa approached from the service corridor.
Celeste moved away.
Leonard touched the support.
Emma bent toward the shoe.
Rosa turned.
Then the recovered clip corrupted.
Next frame:
Collapse.
Daniel entered.
He watched himself charging.
Watched Rosa cover Emma.
Watched the mistake.
Then the shove.
The video ended.
Daniel looked down.
“I gave them what they wanted.”
Margaret sat across.
“You gave them a damaging clip.”
“They built the scene.”
“Yes.”
“And I performed.”
“Yes.”
Daniel appreciated that she did not comfort him.
He asked:
“Can the board see this?”
“They will.”
“Public?”
“Not while law enforcement asks us to preserve it.”
Daniel nodded.
“Will you reinstate me?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Not yet.”
He stared.
“Why?”
“Because this investigation is larger than your innocence regarding the setup.”
“My innocence?”
“You still assaulted Pike.”
Daniel looked away.
She continued.
“The board is not deciding whether your anger was emotionally understandable. It is deciding whether you can lead while under extreme pressure.”
“That is unfair.”
“Yes.”
He looked back.
Margaret did not soften.
“Leadership is unfair.”
Daniel hated her for several seconds.
Then respected her.
“What do I do?”
“Demonstrate judgment.”
“How?”
“By not making this about returning to your chair as fast as possible.”
He leaned back.
Julia would have loved Margaret.
That was why she recruited her.
Daniel nodded.
“Who is running operations?”
“COO Naomi Chen.”
“What about Owen?”
“Suspended pending audit.”
Good.
“And Verona?”
“Frozen.”
Better.
Daniel exhaled.
Margaret continued.
“One more thing.”
He almost laughed.
“Everyone has one more thing.”
“The board found an email between Owen and Celeste.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
Dated two months earlier.
CELESTE: He will never approve Verona at 28.
OWEN: Then we need him out of the room when the vote happens.
Celeste:
How?
Owen:
Leave that to me. Just make sure he reacts like Daniel.
Daniel stared.
Reacts like Daniel.
His temper was part of their business plan.
Celeste replied:
Emma is the only thing that gets past his control.
Daniel stopped reading.
“No.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
The next line:
OWEN: Exactly.
Daniel closed the laptop.
He stood.
Walked to the window.
Pressed both hands against the glass.
Margaret waited.
Daniel whispered:
“She offered my daughter.”
Not literal.
But emotionally true.
She identified Emma as the lever.
Maybe Owen designed the danger.
Maybe Celeste believed it would be theatrical.
But she had contributed the knowledge that made the trap possible.
Daniel turned.
“Does Emma know?”
“No.”
“She never will see this email.”
Margaret studied him.
“That may not be entirely your choice someday.”
Daniel looked away.
Right.
Emma would grow up.
Records existed.
Truth could not always be curated.
“What do I tell her now?”
“The age-appropriate truth.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“You sound like every therapist.”
“Maybe because they’re right.”
Daniel returned home.
Emma was at the table drawing shoes.
One design had stars.
One had wings.
One had a huge price tag:
$45
Daniel sat beside her.
“What’s that?”
“My brand.”
“Forty-five-dollar shoes?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Emma shrugged.
“Because Celeste hated them.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
Emma noticed.
“Dad?”
“Nothing.”
“Happy tears?”
“Complicated tears.”
She accepted that.
“Can Rosa work for my brand?”
Daniel smiled.
“If Rosa wants.”
“Can you?”
“What job?”
Emma thought.
“Security.”
Daniel laughed so hard he cried for real.
Maybe Emma would know more someday.
But today she needed something simpler.
Adults had used her as leverage.
May you like
She still imagined the future as a shoe company where Dad stood at the door and Rosa stayed nearby.
That was enough.
