Chapter 16 - A House Without SafetyMaya did not ask why they were leaving the mansion.

She asked whether Rosie could come.
Daniel knelt beside her suitcase.
"Of course."
"And my yellow pajamas?"
"Those too."
"And my butterfly blanket?"
"We'll take anything you need."
Maya considered this.
"Is Ava going?"
Daniel's hands stopped.
"No, sweetheart."
The child looked disappointed.
"Why?"
"Because Ava has her own home and her own life."
Maya traced a finger over Rosie's repaired arm.
"Can we see her?"
Daniel hesitated.
"I don't know yet."
He had started learning how much damage adults could cause by promising things they had no power to deliver.
So he gave Maya the only answer he could support.
"I'll ask her when the time is right."
They moved into a furnished rental cottage near the Long Island Sound.
It was smaller than Maya's old bedroom wing.
There was one living room, a compact kitchen, two bedrooms, and a backyard enclosed by a wooden fence.
No marble staircase.
No household staff.
No enormous dining room that made three people look lonely.
Daniel carried the suitcases inside himself.
Maya wandered through the rooms, holding Rosie.
"Where's everybody?"
"It's just us for a while."
She looked around.
"Where does Ava sleep?"
Daniel felt another sharp pang.
"Ava didn't live at our old house, sweetheart. She went home every night."
Maya looked surprised.
"She has a house?"
"An apartment."
"With people?"
"With her brother."
Maya considered the information.
Then she smiled faintly.
"Good."
Daniel understood.
Somewhere in Maya's mind, Ava had been trapped inside the mansion just as she had felt trapped.
The idea that Ava had a life beyond Celeste and Daniel seemed to comfort her.
Back at the estate, Celeste discovered that Daniel had disabled her access to Maya's childcare schedule and withdrawn his standing authorization for her to communicate with the child's medical providers.
His family-law attorney had advised him to document the temporary living arrangement and avoid making unsupported allegations.
Celeste was not Maya's biological or adoptive parent.
She had no automatic right to make medical or educational decisions for the child.
But she was still Daniel's wife.
And she intended to use that status.
She called him.
"You've made me look like a criminal."
Daniel stood in the cottage kitchen, washing a plate.
"I told the household that Maya and I needed some space."
"You took her without discussing it with me."
"I told you we were leaving."
"That's not discussing it."
He placed the plate in the drying rack.
"What do you want, Celeste?"
"To know what your lawyers are telling people."
"The investigation is ongoing."
"You can't investigate a marriage."
"No. But we can investigate forged documents and missing company money."
There was a long silence.
Then Celeste said, "You think you're better than me?"
Daniel looked toward the living room.
Maya was arranging cushions on the carpet.
"No."
His answer seemed to surprise her.
"I think I've made serious mistakes. I'm trying to stop making them."
Celeste's voice hardened.
"People are going to hear about the maid."
"They already should."
"You'll lose everything."
Daniel looked at his daughter.
"Maybe I deserve to lose some things."
He ended the call.
At the mansion, Celeste threw her phone onto the sofa.
She had expected anger.
Denial.
A desperate attempt to preserve his reputation.
Daniel's willingness to admit wrongdoing frightened her far more than his temper ever had.
She could manipulate a man who needed to believe he was blameless.
A man prepared to face consequences was less predictable.
Celeste opened her laptop and revised the confidential memorandum about Daniel's behavior.
She attached the settlement negotiations, emphasizing the assault allegation while omitting the evidence that Ava had been protecting Maya.
Then she added details about Daniel's financial decisions.
His failure to supervise company payments.
His strained relationship with Eleanor.
His decision to move Maya from the family home.
Some of those facts were true.
Others were incomplete.
Together, they suggested a man losing control.
Celeste sent the memorandum to two members of Whitcomb Waterfront Holdings' advisory board.
Her subject line was carefully chosen.
Urgent Governance Concerns.
Daniel learned about the memorandum the next morning.
A board member called him directly.
"Daniel, I've received something troubling."
"From Celeste?"
"Yes."
Daniel listened.
The board member explained the accusations and asked whether Daniel intended to respond.
He considered denying everything.
He considered describing Celeste as dishonest.
He considered blaming her for the balcony incident.
Instead, he said, "I struck an employee. That happened."
The board member went quiet.
Daniel continued.
"I also failed to detect serious financial irregularities. An independent investigation is underway. I'll cooperate with appropriate governance measures."
"Are you stepping down?"
"I'll discuss that with the board."
"And the allegations about your daughter?"
"She's receiving professional support. I won't discuss her private medical care."
The board member exhaled.
"That was more straightforward than I expected."
Daniel gave a tired smile.
"It should have been straightforward from the beginning."
That evening, Maya helped him prepare dinner.
He let her wash tomatoes in a plastic bowl.
She dropped one.
It rolled beneath the refrigerator.
For one terrible instant, her face froze.
Daniel recognized the expression.
She was waiting for anger.
He crouched beside her.
"Accidents happen."
Maya looked at him carefully.
"You're not mad?"
"No."
"Even if I spill?"
"Even then."
She examined the bowl as though testing a new rule.
Then she deliberately placed another tomato on the counter.
It rolled a few inches.
Daniel smiled.
"Let's keep the rest in the bowl."
Maya laughed.
It was a small sound.
But he had not heard her laugh freely in days.
Later, while she slept, Daniel sat in the living room with the balcony footage paused on his laptop.
He watched Ava run toward the door.
He remembered the expression on her face after the slap.
Not only pain.
Disbelief.
A man with all his wealth and authority had used both to silence someone who was trying to tell him the truth.
Daniel closed the laptop.
Then he called Richard Hale.
"I want independent counsel appointed to review my conduct as well as the financial investigation."
Richard sounded surprised.
"That could expose you to significant liability."
"I know."
"Daniel—"
"No more protecting me from the consequences."
May you like
He looked toward Maya's bedroom.
"Protect the people who didn't cause this."
