Chapter 13 - The Debt Behind the DealBy Wednesday morning, the Mercer family's problems had become three separate investigations.

One concerned what happened at the playground.
Another concerned the missing corporate funds.
The third concerned the effort to pressure Daniel into signing the easement.
The people involved overlapped, but the evidence did not automatically prove the same wrongdoing.
Samuel insisted on keeping the distinctions clear.
"Don't turn this into a story where every suspicious act proves every other suspicious act," he told Daniel.
They were sitting in Helen Cho's office with the forensic accountant retained by Mercer Building Group's independent audit committee.
The accountant, Priya Shah, had spent the night reviewing Grayline's records.
"We have a clearer financial picture," she said.
Daniel leaned forward.
Priya placed a diagram on the table.
"Grayline received two-point-one-four million dollars from Mercer Building Group over eighteen months. We have not yet verified legitimate services supporting those payments."
She pointed to a second column.
"Part of the money moved to ordinary business expenses. Some went to Martin Bellamy's consulting compensation. A substantial portion was transferred onward to another entity."
"Which entity?" Daniel asked.
"Eastbank Equity Holdings."
Samuel looked up.
"Who controls that?"
"We've identified records suggesting Meredith has a beneficial interest. We need additional documentation to establish the exact ownership and flow of funds."
Daniel sat very still.
Priya continued.
"Separately, the proposed Harrow Point closing included a three-point-six-million-dollar payment to Grayline. The documents characterize it as compensation for site assembly and advisory work."
"Which could then be transferred to Eastbank," Daniel said.
"Potentially. We haven't established what instructions would have governed that payment."
Helen looked at Daniel.
"What is clear is that your sister had a material interest she did not disclose when urging you to approve the transaction."
Daniel stared at the diagram.
His sister had repeatedly accused him of making emotional decisions.
All the while, she may have been pushing him toward an agreement from which she expected to profit personally.
"Why take the money in the first place?" he asked.
Priya turned another page.
"Eastbank appears to have invested heavily in a commercial redevelopment project that experienced major losses. There are also loans secured by Meredith's personal assets."
"How much debt?"
"At least four million dollars appears in the records we've reviewed, though we still need to distinguish personal borrowing from company obligations."
Daniel rubbed his face.
Meredith had never mentioned those investments.
Not once.
Samuel watched him.
"She may have believed she could repay the money before anyone noticed."
Daniel looked up.
"That doesn't make it less serious."
"No," Samuel said. "It doesn't."
Later that day, Daniel visited Nora's greenhouse.
He had avoided the building since her death.
The staff maintained it, but the scent of damp earth and flowers still reminded him of her.
He stopped beside a stone bench where she used to sit.
For years, he had wondered whether he could have changed the course of her illness by finding a better doctor, noticing symptoms earlier, or insisting on a different treatment.
Grief had made him desperate for someone to take charge.
Meredith had stepped into that desperation.
He had mistaken surrender for relief.
His phone vibrated.
It was a message from Maya Carter, sent with Liam's permission.
She had attached a photograph of Kyle's letter lying on Liam's kitchen table.
Beneath it, Liam had written a short reply.
Tell Kyle I remember our promise about his soccer kick. He doesn't owe me an apology.
Daniel read the words twice.
Then he sat on the stone bench and cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just the exhausted, painful crying of a man beginning to understand how much damage he had caused while believing he was protecting everyone.
At four o'clock, Meredith met Martin Bellamy at Grayline's Stamford office.
It was an ordinary commercial suite with two desks, a conference table, and several filing cabinets.
There was nothing about it that suggested millions of dollars in consulting work.
Martin looked pale.
"The bank wants documentation for the invoices."
"We have contracts."
"They want deliverables."
"We have preliminary reports."
"Meredith, half of those reports are recycled from older projects."
She slammed her bag onto the table.
"Keep your voice down."
"There's nobody here."
"Then stop acting like you're already convicted."
Martin stared at her.
"You promised the work would be legitimate by the time anyone reviewed it."
"It was legitimate."
"You told me to submit invoices for projects we never worked on."
Meredith looked toward the door.
"Do not say that again."
"Why? Because it's true?"
She stepped closer.
"I brought you into opportunities you never could have reached yourself."
"And now you're going to destroy me."
For a moment, Meredith seemed ready to strike him.
Instead, she straightened her jacket.
"We need to salvage the Harrow Point agreement."
"How?"
"Daniel has weaknesses."
Martin shook his head.
"Leave his family alone."
Meredith's eyes narrowed.
"Don't lecture me about family."
"That little boy could have been hurt."
The silence that followed was absolute.
Meredith stared at him.
"What did you say?"
Martin swallowed.
"I saw the incident photo. Gregory mentioned concerns about how it was obtained."
"Then you know Daniel lost control."
"I know you're doing things that are making everything worse."
Meredith picked up her bag.
"You're becoming a liability."
Martin laughed bitterly.
"We both are."
As she reached the door, he spoke again.
"There's something you should know. I've retained copies of the payment instructions you sent me."
Meredith stopped.
"Delete them."
"No."
She turned slowly.
"Martin."
"I'll cooperate with the investigators if I have to."
May you like
For the first time, she understood that someone inside the financial arrangement was prepared to tell the truth.
And unlike Kyle, Liam, or Daniel, Martin possessed documents tying her directly to the money.
