Chapter 15 - Before They Met

Daniel checked the date four times.
Vanessa had always told him they met at the Hartford Children’s Foundation gala eleven months after Emily died.
She had been seated beside him by chance.
At least that was the story.
The photograph proved Vanessa and Grant had been in the same place seven months earlier.
Julia studied the image.
“Could be coincidence.”
Daniel pointed at Grant’s hand.
It rested against Vanessa’s lower back.
“No.”
Bell said nothing.
The photograph was transferred with the other evidence.
The USB drive required forensic imaging before anyone opened it.
Daniel hated waiting.
He was getting better at it.
Not good.
Better.
At home, Lily ate cereal while Milo sat under the table collecting pieces she deliberately dropped.
Daniel pretended not to notice.
Rachel did not.
“Lily.”
The toddler froze with cereal between two fingers.
“Milo is not a vacuum cleaner.”
Lily looked under the table.
“Milo hungry.”
“Milo ate.”
Lily dropped the cereal anyway.
Milo caught it.
Daniel laughed.
Rachel looked at him.
“You’re encouraging her.”
“Absolutely.”
For a moment the house felt alive instead of contaminated.
Then Daniel saw the pale gift box on the counter.
He had moved it from the office.
He did not know why.
Perhaps because hiding it felt wrong.
Lily noticed.
“My present.”
Daniel lifted the box.
“You want it?”
She nodded.
He set it down.
Lily opened it and removed the cracked ceramic heart.
“Broken.”
“A little.”
“Nessa break?”
“No.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“It got hurt when you fell.”
Lily traced the crack.
“Fix?”
“We can try.”
She handed it to him.
The trust in that gesture frightened him.
Fix.
As if fathers could.
At noon, Bell called.
The USB contained financial spreadsheets and scanned contracts.
Emily had copied vendor records from years earlier.
The data showed payments flowing from Mercer Hospitality to subcontractors connected to Peter Hall.
Later transactions shifted toward entities linked to Grant.
“Can you prove theft?” Daniel asked.
“We can prove patterns worth investigating.”
There it was again.
Evidence first.
But Bell continued.
“There’s a folder called introductions.”
Daniel felt something change.
“What’s in it?”
“Emails.”
Between whom?”
“Emily and a private investigator.”
Daniel stared at the pool through the windows.
“Emily hired an investigator?”
“Apparently.”
The emails described Grant’s social connections.
Peter Hall.
Contractors.
Consultants.
And Vanessa Cross.
Vanessa had not been Grant’s romantic partner.
Not then.
She had been a fundraising consultant with significant personal debt and a brother with gambling problems.
Emily’s investigator believed Grant had paid Vanessa through one of his consulting companies.
“For what?” Daniel asked.
“No proof in the file.”
“Then why photograph them?”
“Because Emily asked the investigator to watch anyone receiving unexplained payments.”
Daniel sat.
Emily had discovered Vanessa before Daniel knew her name.
That was almost impossible to process.
Julia arrived an hour later with another development.
Grant had called an emergency board meeting.
“For what?”
“To place you on administrative leave pending investigation.”
Daniel laughed.
“He’s suspended.”
“Operationally. He still holds a board-appointed officer position until formal action.”
“He’s under investigation for stealing from us.”
“And you are being accused of financial mismanagement.”
“By him.”
“Yes.”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“What’s his basis?”
“The fraudulent transfers originated under your credentials. Questionable vendor approvals happened while you were CEO. Your wife is tied to Northstar. He will argue failures of oversight.”
“He committed the fraud.”
“Prove it to the board.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You sound excited.”
“I enjoy simple objectives.”
The emergency meeting was scheduled for the next morning.
Grant had rallied two outside directors worried about company exposure.
Daniel still controlled his own board seat, but Emily’s trust seat was occupied by an independent director whose duty was to Lily, not Daniel.
If Grant convinced the board Daniel’s judgment endangered the company, they could temporarily remove him as chief executive even if they could not strip his ownership.
Daniel looked at the forged amendment.
Grant’s plan was collapsing.
So he was changing tactics.
That night Vanessa called.
Daniel nearly ignored it.
Then answered.
“What?”
“Grant’s going after the board.”
“I know.”
“He’ll use me.”
“He already did.”
“I can help you.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“You shoved my daughter into a pool.”
“I know.”
“You stole from my company.”
“I know.”
“You lied about my mental health.”
“I know.”
The repetition stopped him.
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
“I’m telling you Grant planned our meeting.”
Daniel went silent.
“At the gala?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He paid the event consultant to change the seating.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Why me?”
“Because Emily was dead.”
The cruelty of the sentence came from its simplicity.
Vanessa continued.
“You were grieving. Grant said you trusted anyone who made your life easier.”
Daniel looked toward the kitchen.
Rachel was helping Lily put pajamas on Milo.
The dog looked miserable.
Lily looked delighted.
“What was your job?”
“Get close.”
“Marry me?”
“Eventually.”
“Did he tell you that?”
“No.”
“What did he tell you?”
“To make you trust me.”
“Why?”
“So you’d sign whatever came later.”
Daniel stood very still.
“And did you?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.”
Daniel felt nothing.
That frightened him.
“When did it stop being a job?”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
Her answer came almost too quietly to hear.
“Before the wedding.”
Daniel stared at the pale gift box.
He wanted to ask if she had loved him.
Instead he asked the question that mattered more.
“Did Grant ever tell you Emily knew about you?”
Another silence.
Then Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”
Daniel’s hand tightened.
“When?”
“After we were married.”
“What exactly did he say?”
“He said Emily had almost ruined everything once already.”
Daniel sat down.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because by then I knew what that would do.”
“What?”
“You would start asking why your dead wife had investigated the woman sleeping beside you.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa continued.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“The photograph you found?”
Daniel’s eyes opened.
“How do you know about it?”
“Grant told me Emily had pictures.”
“Where was it taken?”
“At the Marlowe Hotel.”
“Why were you there?”
Vanessa inhaled.
“Grant was introducing me to someone.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
May you like
Then said a name Daniel had not expected.
“Peter Hall.”
