Chapter 13 - The Arrest That Didn’t Happen

Danielle expected police cars before sunrise.

They never came.

At nine the next morning, Detective Ortiz called.

“The district attorney wants more.”

Danielle stared at the phone.

“More?”

“The recording is strong evidence.”

“She admitted she engineered an accident.”

“She said she wanted you to fail and acknowledged knowing you were upstairs. A defense attorney will argue she was speaking emotionally, hypothetically, or inaccurately.”

“She disabled the cameras.”

“We’re working on proving that.”

“She lied about the vest.”

“Yes.”

“She buried it in the trash.”

“We don’t have video of who put it there.”

Danielle laughed in disbelief.

“So what does someone have to do before you arrest them? Send a calendar invitation?”

Ortiz remained calm.

“I understand your frustration.”

“I don’t think you do.”

“I understand evidence.”

That stopped Danielle.

Ortiz continued.

“If we arrest Evelyn today on the most serious charge and move too fast, we risk giving her defense team exactly what they need.”

“What happens to Mia?”

“You keep her away from Evelyn.”

“That’s it?”

“For today.”

Danielle looked toward the hotel bedroom.

Mia was coloring at the desk.

Cooper lay beside her.

“What about a protective order?”

“Your attorney can seek one immediately.”

Danielle had an attorney by noon.

Not a Carter attorney.

Her own.

Monica Reyes specialized in family law and trusts. She wore no-nonsense glasses and spoke in sentences that felt like doors locking.

“You and Mia are not returning to that house.”

“Lucas still lives there.”

“Then Lucas can decide where he lives.”

Danielle flinched.

Monica continued.

“I’m not here to save your marriage. I’m here to protect your child.”

“Understood.”

“Good.”

They filed for a temporary order restricting Evelyn from unsupervised contact with Mia.

Then Monica asked about the trust.

Danielle explained Keene’s warning.

Monica’s expression darkened.

“If Evelyn is trustee of a trust she allegedly pledged to secure personal debt, we petition Surrogate’s Court for immediate suspension.”

“How fast?”

“If we show risk to assets, very fast.”

“Days?”

“Possibly.”

Danielle nodded.

“What do you need?”

“Documents.”

“Charles Wren has most of them.”

Monica smiled without humor.

“Then Charles Wren is about to have a difficult afternoon.”

At four, Lucas arrived.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“I’m moving out.”

Danielle looked up.

“Where?”

“Hotel nearby.”

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes, I do.”

She waited.

He sat across from Monica.

“I’m giving you full access to my company records.”

Monica raised an eyebrow.

“Voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lucas looked at Danielle.

“Because every time I tried to protect the family, I protected the wrong person.”

Danielle said nothing.

Monica did.

“That realization would’ve been more useful six months ago.”

Lucas nodded.

“I know.”

Danielle almost smiled.

She liked Monica.

Lucas placed a hard drive on the table.

“I also found something.”

“What?”

“An email archive Dad kept offline.”

Danielle leaned forward.

“Project Harbor?”

“Partly.”

Lucas opened his laptop.

The archive contained correspondence between Robert, Samuel Keene, Mark Harlan, and several auditors.

One email was addressed to Robert from an outside forensic accountant.

SUBJECT: HALCYON BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP.

Danielle read.

Halcyon Advisory LLC was controlled through two layers of shell companies.

The ultimate beneficial owner was not Evelyn.

It was a trust.

The Evelyn Carter Family Preservation Trust.

Lucas frowned.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Monica asked, “Who created it?”

Lucas scrolled.

The trust had been formed three years earlier.

Settlor: Evelyn Carter.

Trustee: Charles Wren.

Danielle sat back.

“The lawyer.”

Monica nodded slowly.

“Now this is interesting.”

Lucas clicked another file.

The Family Preservation Trust owned more than Halcyon.

It also owned a company called Bexley Holdings.

Bexley had purchased six million dollars in Carter Residential debt at a discount after Robert’s death.

Danielle looked at Lucas.

“Your mother was buying your company’s debt?”

“With money she took from the company.”

Monica stared at the screen.

“That’s not just hiding losses.”

“What is it?”

“Potentially a control strategy.”

Lucas understood first.

“She was preparing for default.”

Monica nodded.

“If Carter Residential breached its covenants, whoever owned enough distressed debt could gain extraordinary leverage in restructuring.”

Danielle felt the pieces align.

Evelyn had not merely been trying to save herself.

She had been positioning herself to survive the collapse.

Maybe even benefit from it.

Lucas scrolled farther.

Then stopped.

A document appeared.

GUARDIANSHIP CONTINGENCY PLAN.

Danielle’s skin went cold.

The author was Charles Wren.

The date was three weeks earlier.

Lucas opened it.

The first line read:

In the event Danielle Carter is deemed temporarily unfit following a child-safety incident...

Danielle stopped breathing.

Monica whispered, “Oh, hell.”

They read the next sentence.

Recommended emergency guardian: Evelyn Carter.

Recommended interim trustee for Mia’s descendant interest:

May you like

Evelyn Carter.
