Chapter 17 - Vanessa Comes to the Door

Three weeks after Halloween, Lucy and Margaret were still in the furnished apartment.

A temporary court order prevented Vanessa from disposing of house property.

The disputed will had been withdrawn from probate.

A forensic review of Daniel’s signature was underway.

Then, at 8:40 one evening, someone knocked.

Margaret opened the inner door but left the security chain attached.

Vanessa stood in the hallway.

Margaret immediately tried to close it.

“Wait.”

“You should not be here.”

“I need to speak to Lucy.”

“No.”

“Margaret.”

“No.”

Lucy appeared behind her grandmother.

Vanessa saw her.

“Lucy.”

Margaret moved to block the view.

“You need to leave.”

Vanessa held up both hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

“You threw us into the street.”

“I know.”

“You forged documents.”

“I did not say that.”

“Then leave.”

Lucy spoke.

“Why are you here?”

Margaret turned.

“Lucy.”

“I want to know.”

Vanessa’s expression softened.

But Lucy had seen Vanessa perform softness before.

“I wanted to explain.”

“Explain what?”

“Adults make decisions under pressure.”

Lucy stared.

“You mean bad decisions?”

“Yes.”

“Like kicking Grandma out?”

Vanessa looked down the hallway.

“I was angry.”

“At who?”

“Daniel.”

That surprised Lucy.

“He was dead.”

“I know.”

“Why were you angry at him?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled, but Lucy did not know whether the tears were real.

“Because your father spent six years telling me I was his family while making sure I would never really own anything.”

Margaret’s voice sharpened.

“You received two hundred thousand dollars under his legitimate will.”

Vanessa ignored her.

“He trusted Elias more than me.”

“You lied to him.”

“He lied to me too.”

Lucy thought of the secret meetings.

The hidden drive.

The paper.

She could not deny that.

Vanessa took one small step closer.

“Your father had already decided I was guilty before he spoke to me.”

“No,” Lucy said.

“He asked you about the money.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“How do you know?”

Lucy realized she had revealed knowledge of the recording.

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“This conversation is over.”

Vanessa looked toward Lucy.

“Did Elias let you hear it?”

“No.”

“Rachel?”

Lucy said nothing.

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“They’re using you.”

Lucy’s heart jumped.

“Vanessa.”

Margaret’s warning was sharp.

But Vanessa continued.

“They tell you I’m the villain because that makes everything simple.”

“You kicked us out.”

“I made a terrible decision.”

“You said you wanted us gone.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Because every room in that house reminded me that I would always come second.”

“To me?”

“To everyone.”

Lucy looked confused.

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Your father had a mother who needed him. A daughter who needed him. A company that needed him. Elias. Employees. Old friends. Everyone got some piece of Daniel.”

“And you wanted all of him?”

“I wanted to matter.”

Lucy thought for a moment.

“You did matter.”

Vanessa stopped.

“Dad married you.”

“That wasn’t enough.”

The answer was so immediate that even Vanessa seemed startled by it.

Lucy finally understood something.

Vanessa did not want love.

She wanted proof that nobody else could compete with her.

Lucy asked, “Did you make the fake will?”

Margaret inhaled.

Vanessa looked at the child.

For several seconds there was nothing calculated in her face.

Only exhaustion.

Then the mask returned.

“No.”

Lucy knew she was lying.

Not because of evidence.

Because she had watched Vanessa lie every day for years.

She stepped backward.

“Then there’s nothing to explain.”

Margaret closed the door.

Vanessa remained outside.

A minute later they heard her footsteps disappear.

Lucy sat on the sofa.

Margaret immediately called Rachel.

Rachel was furious.

“She should never have approached you.”

“She didn’t threaten us,” Margaret said.

“That isn’t the point.”

Lucy looked toward the door.

“Grandma?”

“Yes?”

“She said Dad lied too.”

Margaret sat beside her.

“He did.”

“Then how are they different?”

Margaret thought carefully.

“Your father hid things because he was trying to fix a danger without admitting he had created part of it.”

“That sounds bad.”

“It was.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She hid things to take what wasn’t hers and control people.”

Lucy nodded slowly.

“So two people can both lie but not be the same.”

“Yes.”

A few minutes later Rachel called again.

Her tone had changed.

“Margaret, the signature report came in.”

Everyone went silent.

“The signature on the new will is not Daniel’s natural signature.”

Lucy exhaled.

Rachel continued.

“The examiner believes it was traced or digitally reproduced before printing.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Can they tell who did it?”

“No.”

“Then Vanessa can still deny it.”

“Yes.”

“But we have the laptop logs,” Elias said from Rachel’s office.

“Yes.”

Rachel paused.

“And something else.”

Hospital security had found archived hallway footage from October 19.

The camera did not show inside Daniel’s room.

But it showed Vanessa entering with a document envelope.

Then Tanya.

Then Serena.

And later Vanessa leaving alone.

The envelope was gone.

Rachel’s voice became grim.

“Vanessa may have come to your apartment tonight because she knows this is about to become more than a probate dispute.”

“What does that mean?” Lucy asked.

Rachel answered carefully.

May you like

“It means law enforcement has requested the evidence.”
