Chapter 7 - The Marriage Behind the MoneyVictoria's honeymoon suite overlooked the Atlantic Ocean.

The balcony doors stood open, allowing warm wind to move the curtains around the marble fireplace.

A breakfast tray sat untouched beside an enormous arrangement of white orchids.

Victoria was not looking at the ocean.

She was watching a video on her phone.

It showed Daniel walking out of Emily Reyes's duplex.

The recording had been taken from a parked car across the street.

Adrian Cross stood behind her, adjusting his cuff links.

"How many times are you going to watch that?"

"Until I understand what he's doing."

"He's apologizing to a waitress."

"He's meeting with Gabriel Reyes."

Adrian stopped adjusting his sleeve.

"That's different."

Victoria turned.

"You told me the Reyes problem was finished."

"It was finished."

"Then why is Daniel holding Gabriel's documents?"

Adrian crossed the room and took the phone.

He watched the video once.

His jaw tightened.

"Who sent this?"

"An investigator."

"One you hired?"

"One who understands discretion."

Adrian placed the phone on the table.

"This is exactly the kind of thing we don't need."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"Do you think I wanted that girl at my wedding?"

He looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

She moved toward the balcony.

"The staffing roster arrived two days before the ceremony. I recognized her surname."

"You should have had the agency replace her."

"And give her a reason to suspect we were watching?"

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

"Victoria."

"I thought it would be easier to have security remove her if she caused a problem."

"Did she?"

Victoria looked away.

"Not until Liam started wandering around."

Adrian studied her profile.

He had married a beautiful, ambitious woman who understood power.

He had also learned that her version of events often changed depending on the audience.

"What actually happened in that ballroom?"

She turned sharply.

"I already told you."

"You told everyone she shoved Liam."

"She grabbed him."

"Why?"

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"Are you interrogating me?"

"Daniel is asking questions. I need to know what answers he'll find."

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Victoria picked up her phone and opened an event-planning email.

West ballroom camera to remain inactive during the ceremony and reception, per bride's privacy requirements.

Adrian stared at the message.

"You disabled the camera?"

"Guests shouldn't be recorded without warning."

"Guests were told the event was being filmed. We hired three videographers."

"Not in the service corridor."

"Why that corridor?"

Victoria said nothing.

Adrian exhaled.

He understood enough not to ask again.

Instead, he opened his laptop.

On the screen was a financial model titled ASTER RECAPITALIZATION.

The proposed fifty-two-million-dollar loan would refinance eighteen million in existing debt, fund renovation commitments, and release cash for additional development.

The plan had looked elegant when Adrian first presented it.

Now several assumptions were becoming dangerous.

"What matters," he said, "is getting Daniel to sign before the current loan matures."

Victoria folded her arms.

"He'll sign."

"Not if he's investigating North Quay."

Her face changed.

Adrian noticed.

"You said he didn't know about the vendor accounts."

"He doesn't."

"Then why are the Reyeses showing him old invoices?"

Victoria moved closer.

"Because Gabriel has spent three years trying to ruin me."

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Gabriel doesn't know enough to ruin you. The problem is what happens if Daniel follows the payments."

Victoria glanced at the ocean.

The water looked calm.

She wished her life were as simple as the view.

"Russell will keep him focused on the deadline," she said.

"Russell is a chief financial officer, not a magician."

"He approved the bridge borrowing."

"He approved it because you gave him forecasts based on revenue that hasn't materialized."

Victoria turned back.

"And whose development forecasts were those?"

Adrian said nothing.

Their marriage was three days old.

Already, they were dividing responsibility for decisions neither wanted examined.

Victoria approached the desk.

"What about the trust consent?"

Adrian shut the laptop halfway.

"It's being handled."

"That's not an answer."

"The closing package contains a consent."

"An authentic one?"

Adrian met her eyes.

"Do you want to complete this refinancing or not?"

Victoria stared at him.

She had known Adrian for four years before marrying him.

He had introduced her to private lenders, property developers, and investors who understood how to move money quickly.

He had also promised that once the refinancing closed, Victoria would possess enough liquidity to buy out several minority investors and establish her own development firm.

She would finally have something Daniel did not control.

And something her dead father had never trusted her to build.

"Daniel cannot find out before closing," she said.

Adrian rose.

"Then stop antagonizing him."

Victoria looked at the wedding photographs displayed on the suite's television.

One picture showed her smiling beneath a flower-covered arch.

Daniel stood nearby with Liam.

The child looked miserable.

She remembered his bouquet sliding across the floor.

She remembered Emily lunging toward him.

And she remembered the moment Daniel raised his hand.

For one brief instant, Victoria had thought everything would work in her favor.

The waitress would be discredited.

Gabriel's daughter would lose her access to Aster House.

Daniel would become consumed by protecting himself from scandal.

Instead, her brother was asking questions that threatened far more than a wedding.

Victoria picked up her phone.

She called Martin Keller.

When the security supervisor answered, she spoke without greeting him.

"Has Daniel requested the original camera files?"

"Yes, Mrs. Cross."

"Did you give them to him?"

"Not yet."

"Good. Keep them secured until I return."

Martin hesitated.

"Mr. Mercer is the company's chief executive."

"And I'm the executive responsible for this property's operations."

"I understand."

Victoria's voice sharpened.

"Then understand this. Nothing leaves the security office without my authorization."

She ended the call.

Neither Victoria nor Adrian knew that Martin had already received a separate preservation instruction from Daniel.

May you like

And Martin had made a decision.

He had copied the available recordings to an external drive.
