Chapter 10 - Laura’s Voice

Naomi found the recording by accident.

It was attached to an old encrypted folder created during Laura’s estate planning.

The file was labeled:

FOR DANIEL — ONLY IF NEEDED

Naomi called Daniel before opening it.

“You should hear this.”

He came alone.

Laura appeared on the screen.

Thin.

Pale.

Wearing the blue sweater Daniel had loved.

She had recorded it six weeks before she died.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Hi,” Laura said.

Then she smiled at the camera.

“If Naomi is showing you this, something complicated probably happened.”

Daniel laughed and cried at the same time.

Laura continued.

“I’m not making this because I think you’ll fail Ethan.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I’m making it because I know you, Danny.”

Nobody had called him Danny since Laura.

“You love peace. Sometimes too much.”

Naomi looked away.

Laura spoke for twelve minutes.

She explained the trust.

Why she wanted independent oversight.

Why Ethan’s company interest should be preserved unless selling truly benefited him.

Then she said:

“There may come a day when someone tells you that loving Ethan means putting him somewhere else because home is too difficult.”

Daniel’s breathing stopped.

“That person may even believe what they’re saying.”

Laura looked directly into the camera.

“Ask Ethan.”

Daniel covered his face.

“Not the doctors first. Not the lawyers. Not the school. Ask him in whatever way he can answer.”

The recording continued.

“People will underestimate him. They’ll assume limited speech means limited understanding.”

Daniel thought about Claire saying he barely understood.

Laura smiled sadly.

“Don’t make that mistake.”

When the recording ended, Daniel remained seated.

Naomi gave him several minutes.

Finally he said:

“She knew me.”

“Yes.”

“She knew exactly what I would do.”

“No.”

Daniel looked up.

“She knew what you might do.”

“That’s worse.”

“No. It means she built protection around your weakness because she also trusted your strength.”

“What strength?”

“That eventually, when you stopped avoiding the conflict, you would choose him.”

Daniel did not feel strong.

He felt late.

That evening he brought the recording home.

He did not show Ethan.

Not yet.

Instead he asked Claire to watch.

She resisted.

“I don’t think I should.”

“You should.”

Laura appeared.

Claire sat rigid.

Laura spoke about exclusion.

About convenience.

About listening to Ethan.

Claire’s face gradually collapsed.

When it ended, she whispered:

“She made that before she knew me.”

“Yes.”

“So this wasn’t about me.”

“No.”

That almost made it worse.

Claire had spent years believing Rebecca hated her because she could never replace Laura.

But Laura had not warned Daniel about a specific woman.

She had warned him about a pattern.

Claire had become the pattern.

“I used his disability against him,” Claire said.

Daniel did not comfort her.

“Yes.”

She flinched.

“I told myself he would be happier somewhere structured.”

“Would he?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s the point.”

Claire nodded.

They sat in silence.

Then Daniel asked:

“How much did you tell Mark about Laura?”

“Almost nothing.”

“Did he know she left written instructions?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Did he know Naomi had independent authority?”

“Yes.”

“Then he knew he needed pressure.”

Claire looked at him.

“He used me.”

“Yes.”

“But I made myself usable.”

Daniel did not disagree.

The next development arrived the following morning.

Federal investigators were not involved.

Not yet.

But Boston police financial-crimes detectives had opened a preliminary case after company counsel reported suspected forgery and embezzlement.

Mark finally returned his attorney’s call.

He denied stealing anything.

He denied forging Daniel’s signature.

He denied opening Blue Lantern.

Then his attorney made an accusation.

Mark claimed Claire had directed all of it.

Daniel’s lawyer read the statement aloud.

Claire listened.

According to Mark:

Claire wanted Ethan placed residentially.

Claire wanted Ethan’s trust shares sold.

Claire created Blue Lantern.

Claire gave Mark Daniel’s credentials.

Claire expected a payment after the Harbor Point deal.

Claire laughed once.

Then stopped.

Because almost every lie was built around something true.

She had wanted Ethan gone.

She had given Mark credentials.

She had discussed the trust sale.

The best false stories contained enough truth to survive first contact.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“He planned this from the beginning.”

Daniel’s attorney shook his head.

“Maybe.”

“What do you mean, maybe?”

“We need evidence.”

Claire stood.

“I can give you evidence.”

Everyone looked at her.

She walked to the kitchen.

Opened a cabinet.

Reached behind a row of cookbooks.

And removed an old phone.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?”

“A phone Mark gave me.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“Why?”

“He said we should keep company-related conversations separate.”

The attorney held out his hand.

Claire did not give it to him yet.

May you like

She looked at Daniel.

“I never deleted the messages.”
