Chapter 14 - Richard Had Been Watching

Daniel obtained records through discovery.
Richard Hale had paid a private investigator for nearly twelve years.
The invoices were vague.
“Family risk review.”
“Beneficiary verification.”
“Due diligence.”
But the dates followed Nora’s life.
First school enrollment.
Miriam’s move to Vermont.
A summer camp.
A pediatric hospital visit.
Richard had known exactly where Nora was.
“He tracked her,” Brianna said.
Daniel nodded.
Nora looked sick.
“Why?”
Marcus found the answer.
Every time Nora’s legal residence changed, Richard updated internal trust paperwork.
He was making sure she never appeared in jurisdictions or records that might trigger questions about Eleanor’s trust.
“He wasn’t ignoring her,” Rachel said.
“He was managing her existence.”
That phrase haunted Brianna.
Richard had not simply erased Nora.
He had monitored the erasure.
Three years earlier, the investigator reported that Nora had begun asking about Brianna.
Richard visited Hale House soon afterward.
The pencil mark likely came from that visit.
“He stood in that room,” Brianna said.
Logan frowned.
“Why?”
“He wanted to see whether anyone had been using it.”
That suggested fear.
Richard knew Miriam knew about the room.
Maybe he suspected documents had been hidden there.
That evening Bethany told them something else.
“Miriam confronted Richard three years ago.”
“About Nora?” Brianna asked.
“And the amendment.”
“What happened?”
“He told her if she reopened the matter, he would accuse her of mismanaging Nora’s assets.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Did Miriam manage Nora’s assets?”
“Only a small educational account.”
“Any wrongdoing?”
“None.”
“Then why would she be afraid?”
Bethany looked down.
“Because Richard had created documents.”
Fabricated records.
The same pattern.
Richard did not merely commit misconduct.
He built alternate versions of events.
Paper trails designed so that if anyone challenged him, he could make them look guilty too.
Logan finally understood the trap around Brianna.
That did not excuse her.
But it explained why Richard had always seemed so certain nobody would turn on him.
Everyone had something to lose.
That night Brianna visited her father.
Against advice.
She did not go alone.
Her attorney accompanied her.
Richard received them in his library.
“I wondered when you would stop hiding behind Logan.”
Brianna sat opposite him.
“I learned from you.”
Richard poured himself whiskey.
“What do you want?”
“To hear you say Nora’s name.”
He smiled faintly.
“Nora.”
“Again.”
“This is childish.”
“Fourteen years you acted like she didn’t exist.”
“I arranged a stable childhood for her.”
“Miriam did that.”
“With family money.”
“You stole family money from her.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Money is not morality.”
“No. But theft is theft.”
“You’ve become very dramatic.”
Brianna stared at him.
“Did you ever love me?”
Richard sighed.
“This is why business should never be mixed with daughters.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“I provided everything.”
“That isn’t love.”
“It is what adults call love after they stop believing fairy tales.”
Brianna felt strangely calm.
“You threatened Mom.”
“She was emotional.”
“You falsified records about me.”
“I protected you from ruining your life.”
“You forged Logan’s signature.”
Richard took a drink.
“Can you prove that?”
Brianna knew better than to answer.
She stood.
Richard smiled.
“You think Nora will forgive you?”
Brianna paused.
“No.”
That surprised him.
“I think forgiveness is hers to decide.”
Richard’s smile faded.
“And Logan?”
“His too.”
“You’re willing to lose everything?”
Brianna looked at him.
“I already lost fourteen years.”
She walked toward the door.
Richard called after her.
“You have no idea what Miriam did.”
Brianna stopped.
He had meant to wound her.
Instead, he revealed fear.
She turned.
“What did she do?”
Richard smiled again.
“Ask your precious Nora why Miriam was really collecting documents.”
Brianna said nothing.
But when she left, she called Daniel.
May you like
Because for the first time she realized Miriam’s investigation might not have been only about recovering money.
She might have been preparing to expose something larger.
