Chapter 23 - Felicity Comes Home

Felicity had technically been home for months.

But one June evening she carried the last box from Claire’s apartment into the primary bedroom.

Damon watched her set it down.

Neither mentioned the symbolism.

She opened the closet.

Half her clothes still hung there.

Damon had never removed them.

“That’s either romantic or lazy,” she said.

“Mostly lazy.”

She smiled.

Their marriage had survived.

Not unchanged.

That distinction mattered.

They had separated passwords from secrecy.

Privacy from concealment.

Felicity no longer handled Damon’s business finances.

Not because he believed she would steal.

Because healthy structure reduced temptation, confusion, and dependency.

Damon stopped expecting his spouse to absorb every emotion without outside support.

They had both been raised in families where loyalty often meant silence.

They were trying to teach Ivy something different.

At dinner, Ivy asked, “Are you officially not separated now?”

Felicity nearly dropped her fork.

Damon smiled.

“Yes.”

“Do I get a party?”

“No.”

“That seems unfair.”

“We can get ice cream.”

“Accepted.”

The company recovered portions of the diverted money through insurance, settlement, asset recovery, and restitution proceedings.

Not all of it.

Some was gone.

Damon did not pretend otherwise.

Shareholders absorbed losses.

Reputation took years to repair.

Several employees lost bonuses during the instability.

Victims existed beyond the Hale family.

Damon made that point repeatedly.

“This is not a family scandal with an accounting side plot,” he told senior leadership. “People’s retirement accounts and jobs were tied to decisions made here.”

Open Ledger launched at Bellweather that autumn.

Its first seminar focused on governance failures in closely held companies.

Damon opened with a sentence that made Felicity look up.

“Trust is a value. It is not an internal control.”

Nora smiled in the front row.

Afterward Damon walked through the blue bedroom.

The sewing box sat behind glass now, not as a museum piece, but as a private family object preserved safely.

Inside remained copies of Margaret’s letters.

The originals were archived with legal records.

Ivy entered.

“Can I ask something?”

“Always.”

“Why didn’t Grandpa just put everything in one place?”

Damon laughed.

“Because he was suspicious.”

“Was he right?”

“Unfortunately.”

She studied the sewing box.

“If I ever have a giant secret, should I tell you?”

“Yes.”

“What if it’s really bad?”

“Yes.”

“What if you’ll be mad?”

“Yes.”

“What if Mom says not to?”

Felicity had entered behind her.

She stopped.

Damon looked at her.

Ivy had not intended the question as cruelty.

Children rarely understand where they place knives.

Felicity walked into the room.

“If I ever tell you to hide something important from Dad because I’m scared,” she said, “you tell Dad.”

Ivy frowned.

“What if Dad tells me to hide it from you?”

“Tell Mom,” Damon said.

“What if both of you tell me?”

Damon and Felicity answered together.

“Tell Aunt Claire.”

Ivy grinned.

“Good system.”

Felicity laughed.

Then Ivy became serious.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Why did you cover my mouth that night?”

The question had waited almost a year.

Felicity’s face changed.

Damon stayed silent.

This answer belonged to her.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Uncle Vince?”

“Yes.”

“And Dad being mad?”

“Yes.”

“And getting in trouble?”

“Yes.”

“Did you think I would tell wrong?”

“No.”

Felicity knelt.

“You were telling the truth. I was the one who wanted to stop it.”

Ivy studied her.

“Did it hurt me?”

Felicity’s eyes filled.

“Not physically.”

“I mean inside.”

Felicity swallowed.

“Maybe.”

Ivy thought.

“It scared me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You said that before.”

“I know.”

“What happens after sorry?”

Felicity smiled through tears.

“You try to become someone who doesn’t do it again.”

Ivy accepted that.

Then hugged her.

Not because everything disappeared.

Because children sometimes understand accountability better than adults.

Damon watched them.

Chapter one of their disaster had begun with Felicity silencing Ivy.

Nearly a year later, healing looked like Felicity allowing her daughter to finish every sentence.
