Chapter 9 - A Name Used Without PermissionDaniel looked at the text message on Detective Wu's phone.

Remove the cones before nine. Visitors must not see the work zone.

It had been sent at 7:46 a.m. on the morning Ella slipped.

The sender was a mobile number registered to Mercer Civil and assigned to Daniel.

"I didn't send that."

Tessa sat across from him in the interview room.

"Do you recognize the message?"

"No."

"Who has access to the number?"

"It's a company line. The old phone used to be mine, but I transferred it to the operations office last spring."

"Who uses it now?"

Daniel thought.

"My mother sometimes does. Grant probably has access. Our operations assistant handles messages."

Tessa made a note.

"Can you establish where you were at 7:46?"

"At home. Getting Ella ready for school."

"Anyone with you?"

"My housekeeper came at eight. Before that, just Ella."

Tessa looked up.

"Mr. Mercer, we're not assuming you sent it. We need records that can establish who did."

Daniel nodded.

He had expected anger.

Instead, he felt something worse.

Exhaustion.

For years, he had trusted his mother to handle the company's financial and administrative operations.

He managed employees, construction schedules, equipment, and clients.

Vivian handled lenders, contracts, and the complicated web of ownership documents she insisted were too tedious for him.

He had thought this division made them a good team.

Now he wondered how much he had allowed himself not to know.

"Detective, there's a signed bank certification I didn't authorize."

Tessa looked up sharply.

"Tell me about it."

Daniel explained the additional four-hundred-thousand-dollar draw.

"The bank paused it after I disputed the signature."

"Can you provide the documents?"

"Yes."

"Have you confronted your mother?"

"About the easement, yes. Not the bank request."

"Please let us know before discussing potential evidence with her again."

Daniel almost laughed.

"You make it sound like my mother is dangerous."

Tessa held his gaze.

"A child was nearly pulled into a canal. Someone made a false accusation against the deputy who saved her. We've found signs that warnings were removed. I'm not going to decide what your mother intended without evidence, but I am taking the risk seriously."

Daniel looked down.

"I should have protected Ella."

"You can protect her now."

When he left, he called Iris Bell, Mercer Civil's longtime controller.

Iris was fifty-eight and had worked for the company since Daniel was in college.

She knew every payroll deadline, every truck loan, every supplier who preferred a paper check.

"I need a private meeting," Daniel said.

"Is something wrong?"

"Maybe everything."

They met that evening at a diner near the interstate.

Iris arrived carrying a canvas bag filled with folders.

Daniel stared.

"What's all that?"

"Things I've wanted to show you for six months."

She slid into the booth.

"Your mother told me you were too busy."

Daniel felt his face warm.

"I was."

"No, Daniel. You were trusting her."

He looked away.

Iris opened the first folder.

"Mercer Civil received a revolving credit facility of four-point-eight million dollars for Bracken Crossing. The company has drawn most of it to fund early work."

"I know."

"Do you know what collateral supports it?"

"Company equipment, receivables, contract rights."

"And a personal guarantee from Vivian."

Daniel frowned.

"How much?"

"Up to one-point-two million dollars."

He stared.

"Why would she do that?"

"Because the lender wanted additional security."

"She never told me."

Iris turned another page.

"Then there is Eastbank Environmental Services."

"The contractor at the canal."

"Yes."

She produced a payment ledger.

Over eleven months, Eastbank had received six hundred and twenty thousand dollars from Mercer Civil.

The descriptions referred to environmental remediation, sediment testing, and disposal.

Daniel studied the entries.

"That's a lot for preliminary work."

"It's more than the actual authorized work could explain."

"Are you sure?"

"I asked Grant Vale for supporting invoices. He sent me copies that didn't match the original purchase orders."

Iris pointed to two payment dates.

"The same disposal service appears to have been billed twice, under different invoice numbers."

Daniel kept reading.

"Why didn't you stop payment?"

"I tried. Vivian overrode the hold and had the bank release the funds."

"She has authority as CFO."

"Yes."

Iris lowered her voice.

"But the receiving accounts are stranger than the invoices."

"How?"

"Some payments went to an account associated with Eastbank. Others went to an entity called Bracken Reach LLC."

Daniel looked up.

"I've never heard of it."

"Neither had I."

Iris took a sip of water.

"Then I checked Maryland's business records."

Daniel waited.

"Bracken Reach lists Grant Vale as its resident agent. Its ownership isn't fully apparent from the public filing."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Does my mother own it?"

"I don't know."

Iris looked troubled.

"But I found transfers from Bracken Reach that appear to have funded an option on land beside Orchard House."

"Claire's property?"

"Adjacent to it."

Daniel sat back.

The puzzle was growing larger than a false easement.

Someone was using company money to control the land surrounding Ella's inheritance.

"Why bring this to me now?" he asked.

Iris's expression softened.

"Because Claire asked me to watch those accounts before she died."

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

"Claire?"

Iris nodded.

"She came to my office with questions about the Bracken Crossing invoices."

"When?"

"February of last year."

The same month she created Ella's trust.

"What did you tell her?"

"Not enough."

Iris stared into her coffee.

"Your mother came in while we were speaking. Claire left before we finished."

Daniel waited.

Iris looked up, eyes wet.

"Before she went, your wife said something I haven't been able to forget."

"What?"

"She told me, 'If something happens to me, don't let them take the canal land from Ella.'"

Daniel's vision blurred.

Claire had been dying.

She had known her time was limited.

And while he was trying to keep her comfortable, someone had apparently forced her to spend her last strength protecting their daughter from his own family.

Iris reached into her bag.

"There's something else."

She handed him a sealed envelope.

Claire's handwriting appeared across the front.

For Daniel — when he is ready to listen.
