Chapter 21 - The LicenseClaire Donovan’s teaching-license hearing lasted two days.

The findings were devastating.

Physical aggression toward a student.

Improper handling of student property.

Retaliatory threats.

Failure to maintain professional boundaries.

Participation in academic-integrity violations.

Undisclosed conflicts involving her husband’s company.

The board did not treat every allegation as proven.

That mattered.

Several former-student claims lacked sufficient documentation and were not sustained.

But enough remained.

Far more than enough.

Claire spoke before the final decision.

“For twenty years, I gave everything to students.”

Cameron watched remotely with his parents.

“I made mistakes during a period of extraordinary personal pressure.”

She glanced toward Brayden.

“My family was falling apart.”

Brayden looked down.

Then Claire said:

“I am not the monster people have made me.”

Cameron believed that might even be true.

Monsters were easy.

People were harder.

People could love their child and still teach that child to cheat.

Work twenty years and still abuse authority.

Help some students and humiliate others.

Do good things without canceling terrible ones.

The board revoked her license.

She could appeal.

She did not.

When the decision appeared on screen, Cameron waited for satisfaction.

It came.

Briefly.

Then sadness.

Laura noticed.

“You okay?”

“I thought this would feel bigger.”

“Most endings don’t.”

Daniel nodded.

“The thing that mattered happened when you called.”

Cameron looked at him.

Everything after had been consequence.

The moment of change was smaller.

A boy reaching into his own pocket.

May you like

Pulling out a second phone.

Refusing to let the person with authority tell the only version of what happened.
