Chapter 24 - The Desk

Westbridge replaced Mrs. Donovan’s old classroom furniture during renovation.

One desk survived.

Cameron's.

Scratched laminate.

Metal legs.

The exact desktop where the ruler had slammed.

The school wanted to discard it.

Cameron laughed when Principal Price asked whether he cared.

“Why are you asking me?”

“Because every time we throw something away now, paperwork trauma.”

Fair.

Cameron touched the desk.

BANG.

Memory.

Then it passed.

“Throw it away.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Objects did not deserve shrines.

The ruler from evidence was eventually released to district property and destroyed as obsolete classroom equipment.

Cameron felt nothing.

Good.

Mrs. Donovan's room became Ms. Patel's media-literacy classroom.

Students learned digital privacy there.

The irony was almost too obvious.

Price refused to rename it after Cameron.

He thanked her.

High-school transition approached.

Cameron would leave Westbridge.

At final student-advisory meeting, he presented one recommendation:

Every confiscation receipt should state:

TEMPORARY CUSTODY DOES NOT TRANSFER OWNERSHIP.

Teachers approved.

Parents too.

Simple legal concept.

Apparently necessary.

Aaron attended from back.

Melissa beside him.

They sat together without arguing.

Growth.

After meeting, Price told Cameron:

“You changed this school.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Lots of people did.”

Good answer.

Tessa.

Brayden.

Parents.

Investigators.

Aaron eventually.

Melissa.

Isaac.

Auditors.

Even Harlan's cooperation later.

Systems did not change because one heroic teenager stood alone.

The heroic myth put too much responsibility on children.

Cameron had called for help.

Others were supposed to do their jobs after.

That was healthier.

Tomorrow would be the school’s annual community technology day.

Cameron planned to donate Phone A.

Brayden would not be there.

Patricia obviously not.

No spectacle.

Just Cameron’s choice.

He texted Tessa:

Bring Phone B.

She replied:

Why??

Trust me.

This is how crime starts.

May you like

He laughed.

The final mirror was ready.
