Chapter 10 - Richard Comes to School

Richard returned to Westbridge six weeks after surgery.

No military convoy.

No dramatic entrance.

He wasn't military at all.

He wore a dark suit.

Victor walked several steps behind.

The bodyguard remained outside Principal Holloway's office.

Richard wanted no intimidation.

Mason waited inside with Jamal and Emma.

“Why are we here?” Mason asked.

“Board mediation.”

“Sounds terrible.”

“It is.”

Families met administrators.

Not Mrs. Whitmore.

Not yet.

Principal Holloway began:

“We failed Mason.”

Richard expected corporate language.

She surprised him.

“I failed him.”

Mason looked up.

Holloway continued.

“I allowed Gregory Shaw to manage complaints without independent review.”

She looked at Jamal.

“I failed your family too.”

Monique sat beside him.

“You sure did.”

No one laughed.

Good.

Holloway didn't ask forgiveness.

She explained reforms.

Vendor conflict review.

Independent financial approval.

Student complaint tracking.

Grade audit logs.

Anonymous reporting.

Richard asked:

“What prevents another principal from ignoring reports?”

“External visibility.”

Good answer.

Naomi asked harder questions.

Timelines.

Ownership.

Responsibility.

Mason grew restless.

Then a parent stood.

“My kid needs the after-school program that just got canceled.”

The room shifted.

She continued:

“Everybody here talks about accountability. My daughter was getting real help.”

That mattered.

North County had provided some legitimate tutoring.

Closing everything had harmed students.

Richard said:

“My foundation can bridge funding.”

The parent looked at him.

“That's easy for you.”

He stopped.

She continued:

“You put money in. Then pull it. Then put it back. Our kids live inside those decisions.”

Richard absorbed it.

Power again.

Even benevolent power felt unstable to people dependent on it.

He changed approach.

The foundation created a community board including parents.

Funds would not move solely at Richard's discretion.

Mason watched.

His father was learning in public.

That made him trust him more.

After the meeting Richard asked Mason to show him Room 108.

The classroom had been closed during investigation.

They stood at the door.

Mason froze.

“You don't have to go in.”

“I know.”

He entered.

Desks.

Board.

Flag.

Nothing dramatic.

The front looked smaller than memory.

Richard stood where Mrs. Whitmore had stood.

Mason immediately stiffened.

Richard noticed and moved aside.

“Sorry.”

They stood silently.

Then Mason walked to the spot where he had extended his hand.

He looked down.

“Jamal was here.”

He pointed.

Richard nodded.

“Emma behind her.”

Another point.

The geometry of fear.

Richard asked:

“What did you think after the first hit?”

Mason considered.

“That maybe Jamal was next.”

“Then?”

“After the second, I knew he wasn't.”

“How?”

“The way she looked at me.”

Richard's throat tightened.

“And after you told her about the hospital?”

Mason stared at the floor.

“I thought she'd stop.”

She didn't.

That was the wound.

Not only pain.

Expectation betrayed.

Adults were supposed to become kinder with context.

Mrs. Whitmore became colder.

Mason asked:

“If she apologizes, do I have to forgive her?”

“No.”

“Would you?”

“Not my apology.”

Mason nodded.

They left.

At the hallway exit, Victor stood waiting.

Mason smiled.

“You're less scary without sunglasses.”

Victor removed them.

“Devastating feedback.”

Richard laughed.

The hospital had been the first place Mason saw his father vulnerable.

Westbridge was the place Richard saw his son vulnerable.

Both had tried to hide it.

Now neither needed to.

Then Naomi called.

The county prosecutor had decided to open a formal criminal investigation into North County billing.

Search warrants were coming.

Elaine Whitmore had begun negotiating.

And she had something prosecutors wanted.

A private audio recording.

Patricia Whitmore speaking months before Mason's punishment.

Elaine asked:

What happens if Reed finds the Brooks records?

Patricia answered:

Then we remind Reed that schools can make life very unpleasant for his son.

Richard closed his eyes.

The words confirmed motive.

Mrs. Whitmore had not improvised revenge.

She had planned leverage.

May you like

The ruler was only the moment she got caught.
