Chapter 16 - The Money in Sarah’s Name

The transfer was a trap.

That was Graham’s first conclusion.

Vivian’s was worse.

“What if it isn’t?”

Graham looked at her.

“What are you saying?”

“What if someone has been using accounts tied to my old identity for years?”

The $400,000 came from a dormant litigation reserve.

Authorized with Owen’s credentials.

Deposited into an account opened three months earlier.

SARAH E. VALE.

Same Social Security number as Vivian.

Correct date of birth.

Wrong address.

Marcus investigated.

The account had been opened online using identity documents.

Someone possessed enough of Vivian’s old records to impersonate her.

Colin called an emergency board meeting within hours.

Graham understood why.

The company would soon discover money flowing to the daughter of the man convicted of stealing from it.

And she was married to the CEO.

It looked catastrophic.

“Colin planned this,” Vivian said.

“Maybe.”

“Stop saying maybe.”

“I need evidence.”

She glared.

“You sound like Marcus.”

“That is becoming a compliment.”

The board suspended Graham pending internal review.

Not fired.

Not yet.

News leaked by evening.

WHITAKER CEO’S WIFE LINKED TO NEW QUESTIONABLE TRANSFER.

Reporters gathered outside the gate.

Miles came home from school asking why people were taking pictures.

Vivian knelt in front of him.

“Some adults are arguing about money.”

“Did we steal it?”

“No.”

“Did Grandpa?”

Vivian’s face tightened.

“He made mistakes.”

“People at school said he’s a thief.”

Graham sat beside Miles.

“People sometimes use simple words for complicated things.”

Miles thought.

“Was he bad?”

Graham looked at Vivian.

Then answered carefully.

“He did some bad things. He also had bad things done to him.”

Miles frowned.

“That’s confusing.”

“Yes.”

It was perhaps the most truthful thing Graham had said all week.

Owen agreed to meet investigators.

He admitted running because Colin had threatened Rebecca.

He denied making the transfer to Vivian.

Someone had used his token.

“Who has access?” police asked.

“Colin’s executive assistant sometimes did.”

The assistant, Beth Carrow, vanished before she could be interviewed.

Now the pattern became clearer.

Colin had layered identities.

Graham’s login.

Owen’s authorization.

Vivian’s old name.

Just as the original scheme had used Elias’s credentials.

The same method.

Make the innocent and guilty indistinguishable.

But Marcus found one crucial mistake.

The Sarah Vale account had been accessed from a private network address used by Colin’s country club.

Not proof he personally did it.

But enough for investigators to obtain records.

Vivian should have felt relieved.

Instead, she felt sick.

Graham found her packing a suitcase.

“Where are you going?”

“A hotel.”

“Why?”

“Because your board thinks I compromised you.”

“I don’t care.”

“I do.”

“Vivian.”

She zipped the bag.

“You lost your job today because I brought my past into our house.”

“I was suspended because my uncle is afraid.”

“And because I lied to you.”

He had no response.

She looked at him.

“I need to know whether you are defending me because you believe me or because you are still trying to save our marriage.”

“Both.”

“That’s the problem.”

She lifted the suitcase.

Graham blocked the doorway.

Not threatening.

Just standing there.

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

“I don’t know if our marriage survives this.”

Vivian’s eyes filled.

He continued.

“But I know I do not want you framed for a crime you didn’t commit.”

She nodded slowly.

“That’s enough.”

“For tonight?”

“For tonight.”

She stayed.

At two in the morning, someone threw a brick through the dining-room window.

Attached was a note.

SARAH VALE STOLE FROM US ONCE.

DON’T LET HER DO IT AGAIN.

Miles screamed upstairs.

Vivian ran to him.

Graham stared at the broken glass covering the table where their family mystery had begun.

Then he noticed something beneath the brick.

A photograph.

His father.

Colin.

Elias.

And Laura Vale.

All four smiling at a company picnic in 1996.

On the back were five handwritten words:

ASK WHO SARAH’S REAL ENEMY WAS.
