Chapter 15 - Mason Meets His FatherSix months later, Mason agreed to a supervised family counseling session with Victor.

Victor looked older.

Not ruined.

Just diminished.

No principal’s suit.

No office.

No school authority.

He said:

“I was trying to give you opportunities.”

Mason answered:

“You were trying to give yourself a story.”

Victor flinched.

“What does that mean?”

“You wanted me to be proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That you were great.”

Silence.

Victor looked down.

Mason continued:

“I didn’t need a ninety-five.”

“You could have had it.”

“That’s the problem.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

Mason asked:

“Did you ever know what score I actually wanted?”

Victor looked confused.

“I wanted you to reach your potential.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

No.

May you like

Victor had never asked.

That realization finally entered the room.
