Chapter 18 - The Family Photograph

Two years after the night of the pizza, Maya's school assigned a project.

Define family using one photograph.

Maya brought the instruction sheet home.

Andre assumed she would choose a picture of herself and him.

She didn't.

She chose the old photograph Noah had saved.

Andre.

Simone.

Maya.

Noah.

Kayla.

Everyone smiling.

Andre stared at it.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why that one?”

“Because it's complicated.”

He laughed.

“You're twelve.”

“Almost.”

“Still.”

Maya worked on the project for three days.

She placed the photograph on poster board.

Below it, she wrote:

A FAMILY CAN CHANGE WITHOUT EVERY MEMORY BECOMING A LIE.

Andre felt a lump in his throat.

Maya continued:

Some people leave. Some people stay. Some people hurt you. Some people apologize. Sometimes the people who love you also fail you. Family is not pretending none of that happened. Family is knowing where you are safe enough to tell the truth.

Andre read the final sentence twice.

“You wrote this?”

“Obviously.”

“I'm checking for plagiarism.”

Maya hit him with a pillow.

At school, she received an A.

More importantly, she read the project aloud without crying.

That evening Noah and Kayla visited.

Kayla had started calling Andre by his first name sometimes instead of Dad.

It initially hurt.

Then Andre understood.

She was figuring out her relationships.

He gave her room.

Noah still called him Dad.

Neither choice was wrong.

They ordered pizza.

Again.

It had become almost funny.

Maya complained.

“Why is trauma apparently sponsored by pizza?”

Andre nearly choked laughing.

“What?”

“Dr. Patel says humor is healthy.”

“I don't think that's what she meant.”

Maya grabbed the first slice.

Noah grabbed the second.

Kayla opened another box.

No one asked who deserved what.

After dinner Andre cleaned the living room.

He found the small metal key in a desk drawer.

The original key.

Investigators had returned it after the case concluded.

Andre held it.

Such a tiny object.

It had opened one kitchen drawer.

Then an entire hidden world.

Maya appeared.

“What is that?”

He showed her.

She recognized it.

For a second the room became quiet.

“Do you want it?” Andre asked.

“Why would I?”

“I don't know.”

She took it anyway.

Turned it between her fingers.

Then walked into the kitchen.

Andre followed.

The locked drawer still existed, though the lock had never been used again.

Maya inserted the key.

Turned it.

Opened the empty drawer.

Then removed the key.

“What should we do with it?”

Andre shrugged.

“Your choice.”

Maya stared at the garbage can.

Then shook her head.

“No.”

She put the key back in Andre's hand.

“Keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because Noah did the right thing with it.”

Andre looked at the tiny piece of metal.

Maya was right.

The key did not belong only to Simone's secret.

It also belonged to Noah's courage.

Same object.

Different meaning.

Andre placed it inside Lena's cedar box.

Not hidden.

May you like

Remembered.
